Hi
My son is 9 years old and has always struggled with friendships
He is outgoing, not shy etc, he just doesn’t have the need/ sense to want a solid friendship
He has many ‘friends’ which he spends time with and is happy in school
However I’m worried he hasn’t actually got a solid friendship with anyone and I’m also so worried as he gets older and bonds become deeper he will be left out with no one
I’m terrified he’ll be bullied for this
When I ask who he plays with he usually tells me but it’s a generic answer which I think he’s saying to tell me what I want to hear, it breaks my heart that he feels that way and I feel so guilty that he does feel he has to say that to me
He also doesn’t tell me anything about anyone/ school- I think that’s because he doesn’t know
If you’re still reading (sorry!) has anyone been in this position before? If so how did you get your child to form those friendships and also how did you help them open up and be honest with you?
I’m worried he thinks he’ll let me down by saying he doesn’t have a solid friendship
TIA. X

Hi. I relate to everything you said!! My son is the exact same way. He is 10, and he prefers to play alone. He has friends he occasionally plays with at school, but he is very vague about his days and doesn’t give me much info.
This is definitely a topic I worry about and it just breaks my heart for him bc I know his kids are. 😔
