Newborn Trenches

Hey moms. šŸ’™ I’m really at my wits’ end and hoping to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.

The first couple of weeks honestly weren’t too bad, but now my little guy is 4 weeks old and has become incredibly fussy. He has a lot of gas, and it seems like it’s getting harder for him to work through it. He’s visibly uncomfortable at times, and I give him Mylicon, which seems to help a little.

I also feel like I may have accidentally gotten him overtired. My husband and I have had no luck getting him to sleep in his bassinet. Every time we try, he starts crying, then it takes forever to calm him down and start the whole process over again because he only wants to contact nap right now. Before we know it, it’s time for another feeding, and he’s been awake the whole time. It feels like we’re stuck in this endless cycle.

He’s just so, so fussy. I see friends with these calm babies who go on walks, to restaurants, even on vacations (I wish šŸ˜…), and their babies seem so content. Meanwhile, I’m terrified to leave the house because I feel like at any moment my son will wake up crying from being hungry, gassy, or tired.

There are only a few minutes after a feeding where he’s awake, alert, and looking around. My husband and I try to soak up those moments by talking to him, showing him pictures, and interacting with him, but they’re so short-lived before he starts fussing from gas… and then it’s already time to try to get him back to sleep and he won’t go down alone so we have to soother him and contact nap in our arms till the next feed.

It’s been like this for the past week or so, day in and day out. I’ve found myself crying more often. I’m exhausted from the constant crying and fussiness, and then I feel guilty for feeling this way. I also feel so isolated, like everyone else has these easy babies and I’m the only one struggling.

Has anyone else experienced this or am I the one of the few .. ā¤ļø

Your not alone lovely my daughter was a little fusspot. I know it doesn't help much but it won't last forever. Have you tried different things? I took her out for a walk in the pram every single nap time then when she was asleep I would open the front door and push the pram into the hallway and get a cuppa or a sleep myself! I'd put a sign on the door 'do not knock for ANY reason baby sleeping'. If you have any help take it. Your baby will survive crying with a grandmother for example for half an hour while you take some time for yourself. I wish I'd done this more I thought I had to do everything by myself. You got this mama x

Hey you are not alone! I’m having the exact same experience and my baby is 5wks old. I’m exhausted and it feels like if we aren’t feeding she is upset now. Just try to remember this stage is only temporary and in a week things could be completely different! I’ve noticed warm evening baths help soothe my daughter and if I feed her and then go for a car ride she will sleep. Sometimes relying on that just to stop her from being overtired and get some rest helps. Sometimes they just get extra fussy when they are going through a growth spurt and learning new things which is exciting!

I am also trying to cut dairy out of my diet and avoid gassy foods to see if it helps the gassiness

I don’t have much magical advice to help you that others don’t but you aren’t alone ā¤ļø

Dorothy, let me tell you what you’ve just described could have some directly from having a camera inside of my apartment right now. My daughter is 5 weeks old and for the last few weeks has been seeming to be struggling more with trapped gas. After every feeding, no matter how often we pause to burp she always looks so uncomfortable and even in pain through trying to strain for a poo/toot. She’ll push and squirm so much that she actually turns red. This makes it infinitely more difficult to soothe her back to sleep. I spent the better part of an hour after one of her recent feedings nap trapped. We’ve also been adding the Mylicon drops to every bottle(breastmilk), doing the bicycle leg exercises as well as others, extra tummy time…etc. We recently switched bottles from the mam brand to dr.brown’s anti colic, but those tops leak a ton so today I got the Phillips Avent brand. I also got some probiotic drops and will be trying gripe water soon.

Have you tried biogia probiotics? I would recommend starting with that! I felt my baby is passing gas easier when we introduced this probiotic to her. Is your baby breastfed or formula? That can play a big factor as well in his fussiness

This is a weird one but we switched from the bassinet to the crib (in our room) and that made a world of difference. I think the foam bassinet mattress is not enough and they can feel the hard bottom underneath it. You could try a slightly thicker bassinet mattress or maybe crib instead. We were getting like maybe an hour stretch at a time but mostly just contact naps and crying. The first night we switched to the crib we got 3 hours in bed.

Im going through the same thing. Mylicon helped tremendously for us too. We also started using a top hat potty after diaper changes and when we notice her grunting a bunch. It does help her with a poo or a fart.

We are still trying to figure out how to get her to sleep during the day. She will not nap easily during the day…

My daughter is 4 weeks and we are having the exact same experience. It’s so disheartening sometimes! You’re not alone! Someone in the earlier comments mentioned heating up the bassinet before putting them down, we’ve had some success with this. We just put a heating pad on low for 10 minutes before putting her down.

So my daughter who is almost 4 weeks old normally won’t sleep unless she is on me. But I managed last night to get her to sleep in her own bed after I wrapped one of my shirts around her that I had just worn. I’ve heard your smell is what they look for

Please tell me I’m not the only one 😩

Today has completely thrown us. My 11-week-old was awake for around 6 hours with hardly any proper nap, despite us trying everything to get her to sleep. She’d yawn, we’d try to settle her, but she just wouldn’t go off. To make it even harder, I think she needed a poo and was bunged up, so her sleep and hunger cues became really confusing.

Our health visitor wasn’t concerned, but I’m finding it so hard to know what to do when she seems exhausted but just won’t sleep.

Has anyone else’s baby had days like this? What worked for you? Did they eventually grow out of it?

I feel like we’ve got it all wrong today. It’s not the first time it’s happened either, so I’d really love to know we’re not alone ā¤ļø

Struggling…

I’m really struggling at the moment. The cluster feeding is exhausting. The loud crying is heartbreaking and frustrating in equal measure. I lose my patience so quickly, especially doing the night feeds. My back is killing me. I feel so isolated and lonely even though I have a partner and family surrounding me. I could just cry constantly. We’re 5 weeks in and it just feels like it’s never going to get better. I love her so much I just wish it would be a little bit easier some days..

What time does your baby go to bed?

My babies 7 weeks and we just put him to bed when we go to bed which can be like 10-11. Unsure if I should be making an effort to do so earlier? He does basically contact nap on us the whole evening

Advice please- poorly toddler

My son randomly got unwell around 4:30pm tonight. We was out visiting family so I bought him home and he was sleepy. Tested his temperature when we got home and it was 39.1 and he was very sleepy.
He had 5ml calpol at 5:45 and the temperature was 39.1. At 6:30 it was 38.2 so I tried to give him some milk and he only drank 4oz, usually he’d finish the whole 8oz and fell back to sleep. I’ve put him in his cot with a fan oscillating just checked it again and his temp is 37.8 but he’s still very sleepy.
It’s usually his bedtime anyway but do I try waking him and see if he properly wakes up or do I leave him to sleep and see how he goes in the night?

He was shivering earlier which he’s never done with a high temperature before so I’m extra worried he’s going to be extra sleepy even though his temperatures came down I’m not quite sure what to do. Any advice will be appreciated please x

Please help

My husbands dad, every time we are with him he has my 2.9 year old daughter sitting his lap and he starts running his fingers across her legs and arms and opens her belly and rubs his fingers against her belly then says does that feel good? And I don’t know if this is normal but I feel like I could burst into tears watching it. It just doesn’t seem normal but maybe it is? Please let me know if I’m over reacting?
