My MIL is totally against Halloween and she believes that it’s devilish etc. she’s just against anything full stop to do with magic/ wizards/ witches even to the point where my 3 year old was watching wizard of oz an animated version and my MIL told me she shouldn’t be watching it it’s not very nice as it’s got a witch. I’m preparing myself now for Halloween because my MIL looks after my daughter twice a week and she influences her big time and really drums things into her head. Prior to this wasn’t an issue because my daughter was too young but now she’s nearly 4 this year I’m really going to want to do things with her for Halloween and she’ll be able to talk about it etc. If my MIL starts telling her things like Halloween is bad etc how can I navigate this? Without causing issues with my MIL. How do I communicate it with my toddler if she starts learning from her grandma that she shouldn’t celebrate it etc. any advice in advance would help!

Idk how good your relationship is but I’d have a calm talk with MIL something like “while I do respect your views and I can understand how you feel, I am allowing my daughter to decide for herself what she likes to do. None of it is putting her in danger. I want her to have a happy fun childhood. I would just ask for the same respect in return”

And as far as Halloween, it’s not a celebration of the devil. The holiday origins are interesting. It’s just a fun day where kids dress up. I’m so tired of older folks turning it into something that it’s not. (I grew up Christian and we did Halloween every year and my parents stayed back to hand out candy) ☺️☺️☺️

1) where is your husband in all this? Our rule is we each deal with our own parents to avoid animosity with the in laws.
2) you (through your husband (see above)) need to set tge boundary with MIL, that if she can't be indifferent about it, she shouldn't be talking about it with your daughter. She is allowed her opinion, but to strongly influence your daughter in beliefs that you don't want to raise your daughter with is not on.
3) if she doesnt listen, there is a consequence that you deem possible, whether that is limited contact in build up to Halloween or something else.
But you need to put your foot down about it

It’s your child. As a very religious person myself I do not oppose my beliefs on my children or future grandchildren. I don’t do Halloween, my kids love that shit lol
Your house, your child! End of discussion.
As for your talk with little one, you need to start having real conversations about people’s beliefs and not being influenced by what others believe. Children are not as dumb as we make them out to be and if she can be influenced to think it’s bad then you can influence her to have an opinion and show what you believe.
You need to set that boundary with MIL. Period! Such bs
