I just finalized my divorce after three years. It was long and painful. I have a child with special needs and I asked to move in with my mom and stepdad for two weeks so I had time to look for a place at the beginning of my divorce. They said they were not comfortable with it. I had to take a less than ideal place and whatever was available because I needed to leave quickly with my kids so I moved into a small place which was all I could afford. My mom and stepdad said that when the divorce was final they would help me find a more suitable place and promised money to help with the cost. Today I told them I found a place and was excited and thought that I was ready to make a move into a more favorable place for my kids particularly my special needs child. My step dad said “ well we are only giving you that money if you match it”. Granted they don’t have to give me anything and I am grateful but for years they made this promise and for me to find a place, them take back the deal is disheartening. I am really angry. Any thoughts? Am I overreacting? I don’t have the money to “ match it “ and I just feel like I have taken 5 steps back. I have tried so hard, working 2 jobs but as a single mom it’s really hard.

Where do you live?

You absolutely have the right to be angry, hurt and upset. Changing the goalposts is really cruel. You don't need to be told to match it like you need to be taught a lesson, rebuilding is really hard. They shouldn't have said they'd help, if they aren't going to and then you'd not have had that expectation.
It'll take you longer but you will get there without the help and it will be harder but it'll be even more satisfying. But don't be jumping to help them in the future because gosh they can help and are choosing not to!
Good luck rebuilding. I know it's hard right now. X
