Is an emergency c section recovery harder than a planned one?
What recovery experience did you have with a planned or an emergency c section?
Has anyone had both?
Thank you x

Not sure to be honest, but I would guess the planned would be better.
With a planned c section you get a team whose job it is to preform c sections every day.
With an emergency one the team is whoever is avaliable, and they might not preform it as often.
Then it’s the added stress on you and baby that led to the emergency c section.

Recovery physically is mentally the same. Mentally, knowing and understanding about the op before the surgery can be “easier”, rather than a rushed and panicked decision which can impact mentally and could then lead to delays in healthing physically x

I had a planned c-section and was out of hospital within 27 hours. Personally I was ok with this as wanted to recover at home. I did get a very small infection which probably set my recovery time back by 3-4 weeks.
I think physical recovery from emergency or planned is likely to be the same but I would imagine that mentally emergency c section could take longer to process if that wasn’t your birthing preference. Any c section recovery isn’t easy but it’s manageable with a support network and keeping ontop of pain relief.
For me having an elective felt better because it was more controlled and I felt very prepared for it. Had a lovely birth and no regrets with the delivery.

I had an emergency c section last time and have opted for an elective this time.
I found that i had to keep going. Of course rest is important but for me it really helped getting up and doing things however small. The worst part of the pain was getting up from lying down but not unbearable and the more I moved, the easier it got.
Everyone’s experience will be different of course

I had an emergency c-section three weeks ago & I was back home within 24 hours. My recovery has gone really well - I was off the ‘hard meds’ within 8 days, and then stopped taking paracetamol and ibuprofen a day later. Was out walking the day after getting home & have been doing at least 5k a day walking since then. The team were fantastic and when I eventually removed my bandage and dressing you couldn’t even really see I’d had surgery at all. I really do think it depends on luck! I was 41+3 and had been gymming up until the day before my due date, and although remaining active no doubt helped, I think it’s just how your body reacts to it as I’ve had friends who’ve had different c section recoveries with their second babies to their first. Mentally, we were in theatre so quickly we almost didn’t have time to process it which was probably for the best - once it was all done I was just so relieved to have baby here safely so wasn’t upset I didn’t have the birth id have preferred! I had an emergency C section and feel that the mental recovery is different as mentioned in the comments above but physically it is the same from what I hear from other experiences and my own.
I pushed my recovery back by doing to much and getting an infection but that was my own causing I’ve had friends who had had an emergency C section and doing far better then I had been. And a friend who had a planned and have had a problematic recovery.
As for staffing from my understanding you would wait for surgeons who specialise in C sections regardless I.e if it’s planned and an emergency comes in there going to perform on the emergency before getting to the planned. Or if an emergency op comes through and there in the middle of a planned they would know about it and have to leave at the earliest convenience for the emergency so the skills are the same. You shouldn’t be operated on by any professional who doesn’t know the procedure Inside and out. (my emergency had to wait to the surgeon)

I had a cat-3 emergency because they kept refusing to let me have one until I told the midwife that admitted me after my waters broke and she said you want a section we’re getting you one. I think my experience would be more similar to a planned section, it was great I was up and about the next day. We had to stay in hospital because my girl wasn’t feeding and one of the TC nurses told me she couldn’t tell I’d had a section bc of how mobile I was the only thing i hated was the sharp pain i get when u make quick sudden moves or sneeze hard but that happens with both. Wjen you are in hospital tho they give you morphine after and I was discharged with naproxen, codeine, and paracetamol

I had an emergency c-section. And my recovery was quite long due to the shock to my body. I went in for a low movement checkup and I ended up having the surgery. No one was even in the room with me and I was shaking uncontrollably. They said my baby was fighting for each breath and we can’t wait for anyone to come. So it took me a while to process that hence the long recovery
