My understanding is that is a branch of obstetrics that handles high risk pregnancies.
My ob refers out for all the important scans and ultrasounds to a maternal fetal medicine office. So I see my ob for check ups and then them for the big stuff like the anatomy scan

What Martta said. I'll be going to MFM because I have twins and that's automatically higher risk. Anything that might be considered high risk goes to MFM at least for a consult.
