First-time mum struggling with milk supply 🤍

I’m a first-time mum and I’m currently 7 weeks postpartum. I’ve been really struggling with my milk supply and some days I’m only able to express around 39–60 mL in a whole day, or sometimes that amount over two days. 😔

I feel really guilty that I’m not able to breastfeed my baby the way I hoped I would, even though I know I’m trying my best. It’s been quite emotional and I’d really love to hear from other mums who have been through something similar.

Did anyone manage to increase their supply around 7 weeks postpartum? What actually helped you, whether it was pumping routines, feeding techniques, lactation support, or anything else?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. 🤍

Are you latching the baby too? Or strictly pumping?

Latch baby more often

This is a normal amount if you’re directly breastfeeding! Baby will be getting plenty from you and your body knows not to make excess milk. Do you need baby to take expressed milk? If so you’ll need to trigger more milk production by pumping regular to trick your body into thinking your baby needs more milk. Make sure you’re drinking over 2L of water per day and at least 700 extra calories to accommodate the extra production. Or if it’s not essential to have expressed milk then leave the pumps and just latch ◡̈

Do you have a local bf support group?
If baby is drinking directly from breast, they’ll be getting a lot more than what you can pump out. As long as baby has a sufficient amount of wet nappies, don’t panic! I managed to bf both my babies 12mo+ and barely ever got much out from pumping (just incase I wanted extra for the odd bottle etc)

Please find a lactation specialist - they’re covered under insurance! They can be very hands-on and super helpful, and they can help figure out if there’s anything actually wrong or if you just need some teaching or a different technique or anything else 😊 with my first I didn’t think I’d be able to breastfeed because in the hospital we were never together - she was in the NICU and I couldn’t visit her so I felt depressed and didn’t want to pump. But once we got home I just latched her all the time and pumped whenever she was sleeping. I also drank and ate a lot 😅 I’ve also been making my own lactation smoothies for the second time around of breastfeeding. Brewer’s yeast, flax seeds and oats, whatever frozen fruits, sweetener of choice, peanut butter, tiny little bit of salt to get rid of bitterness, milk. Not sure that it actually boosts supply, but there are a lot of good things in it and my supply is a lot more than what I need right now. I hope this helps!

Tips for staying awake!

My LO is 9 weeks and suffers from reflux . I’m presently having real trouble trying to keep myself awake for night feeds and then the subsequent burping and keeping vertical for 30 mins after feeding. I just woke to her pretty much throwing up her whole last feed because I did the laid down feed position in bed and then let us both just go straight to sleep without the burping reflux routine. I’m now feeling really guilty. Having to do the whole feed routine again. Just so tired.

Any tips? I usually just scroll on my phone but that doesn’t seem to be cutting it!

I will add, we always ending moving to the spare room around 5 or 6pm which does generally help with this feed time as change of scenery. But I can’t do that every time

Are we having regular sex?

We're averaging 1-2 times per week. What about you? I thought this was normal but my husband just told me we're not having enough sex. We have a 24 month old and a 12 week old I thought we were doing decent considering....am I wrong?
This has been the average since my son was born 2 years ago.

Is this fair?

I have a 4 mth old and a 2 yr old.

I ask my partner to take my 2 yr old out this afternoon just them 2. While I catch up on some sleep with the baby. (Exclusively breastfed)

He says this is unfair as sleeping is my free time? So he should get some free time in return?

8 month olds

My baby will be 8 months at the end of this month and struggling is not the word. All she does atm is cry, and winge and fight. Shes fighting her naps all day long and at bedtime, Theres just a constant crying or winging going on and I really don’t know what to do anymore. I could’ve done everything and she would still be crying. I’m really getting inpatient and struggling because I’m literally shattered, doing it all on my own most days and just feel like it’s gonna be like this forever.

Tongue tie assessment with infant feeding team

Hi ladies,

I had an assessment with the infant feeding team and the result was borderline. They said she had a milky coated tongue at the back and a high palate. Not sure what all this means. My baby hiccups before and after feeds and sometimes the latch is sore but she has been gaining weight steadily so weight isn't a concern. Not sure if it's related but sometimes after a feed she also coughs, maybe this is related to fast milk flow... The team has referred me to the tongue tie team but just not sure or convinced she needs the snip or not. Is it fair to snip if she doesnt really need it? There is no pain relief for the baby so don't want to get it done unnecessarily. Anyone else had a borderline result?
