Hi, just curious if anyone else has had the same issue, i went to a pharmacy today to try buy loratadine for hayfever/allergies. But got refused the sale due to pregnancy and getting told that no hayfever tablet is safe for pregnancy and they will not provide the tablet unless prescribed. It has really confused me as NHS website says it is safe etc.

I think it’s a bit of a some say yes some say no.
When I questioned it at my booking appointment with midwife at the start of pregnancy I asked about hayfever tablets as I normally suffer on and off, she said it’s better to not take them if you can. But if it got really bad there is only one type they say if have to but I can’t remember which one as I’ve just stuck it out on the bad days

I've been using loratidine. It's available on the shelves in supermarkets, don't even need over the counter. I think the pharmacist is muddled! It's not licenced in pregnancy because no one is going to pay to study it, but it's been used for years without issue x

Saline nasal spray to help with nose congestion and flush pollen away is recommended

It’s best to talk to your GP, I asked this question early on in pregnancy and was advised against taking them…. It was very difficult and annoying. I was also provided this website https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/leaflets-a-z/hay-fever/

I’ve had this problem both pregnancies. I’ve been told you can take them and then you can’t, so I just didn’t and suffered. I’ve never got a clear answer 🤷♀️

I also went to the pharmacy first but they told me they couldn’t give me anything due to pregnancy and this needed to be prescribed by GP, so I contacted my GP and they prescribed me a nasal spray ‘flixonase’ but recommended to only take it when my Hayfever was really bad. Hope that helps, Hayfever is the worst!
