Nursery consumables

Consumables are optional, you don’t have to pay them.
I’d be very concerned if our nursery stopped a snack without telling us and I would question why. Food for children in your care isn’t a place to make savings!

Hi, my understanding is that nurseries charge this because the funding the government give them is actually less per hour than what parents would usually pay. Therefore the government funding barely covers staff/building costs therefore they need to charge extra for all the core and fun things to supply to the children.

I do agree that stopping the morning snack is concerning, especially without telling parents.

This feels really over inflated! Bikes, aprons….. the things you expect in these settings?!

According to current DfE guidance, I’d challenge a few things. Funded hours must be available without mandatory extra charges. They cannot charge for toys, equipment, craft materials or learning resources needed to deliver normal childcare/EYFS, so I’d question bikes, sensory play equipment, painting aprons and hi vis jackets being included in a compulsory £10 ‘enhanced provision’ fee. Nappies and food/milk can be charged for, but these charges must be optional and you must be able to opt out/provide your own. So if your child hasn’t used nappies for months, challenge the nappy charge too. If they say any of these charges are compulsory to keep the funded place, I’d raise it with the council’s Early Years Funding team
