Breastfeeding & Pumping

Apologies for the long post.

My baby girl is nearly a month, we had a great start to our breastfeeding journey and she picked up more than her birth weight in 10 days.

I’m finding it harder to get a deeper latch with her now, and find she is popping off more, I think my let down is really fast as well as she almost comes off for a break then wants to be put straight back on. I am hand expressing initially and leaning back while feeding to try help this - sometimes it does sometimes she’s still gulps and chokes. But she also seems to ‘lazy’ to open her mouth wide and it takes a few tries.

She’s also a very gassy baby, sometimes I have to de latch her a few times to burp her so she feeds more comfortably but the she sometimes will just fall asleep and won’t go back on the breast which I’m assuming is fine as she is content after a feed. I have started her on infacol to see if this helps.

Now at night, she wakes up maybe once and then I wake her up, purely just because of how full my breasts get and I’m so anxious about getting blocked duct- it was working fine and we were feeding almost every 3ish hrs at night, however now she is too sleepy and I can’t latch her or if I do she doesn’t stay awake that long and her latch hurts. My nipples are feeling so raw in the mornings.

So should I just leave her to sleep? I feel she is hurting my nipples more at nigh with her sleepy latch but then do I then need to pump? I don’t want to create an oversupply and I don’t want to get a blocked duct - such a balancing act to juggle with and I’m feeling so overwhelmed.

I would like to start a mini stash of milk so if I’m away there is milk for her but I don’t want to get into a heavy pumping regime.

She is an emergency c section baby (if that is relevant for anything) we are going to a chiropractor this week to see if this helps with tension. We also have been referred to check for a tongue tie but from what I’ve read and seen of a tongue tie she doesn’t seem to have one, but I’m no expert.

I’m going to drop into our local breastfeeding peer support group in the week but thought just to ask here.

Thank you,

Sincerely a very overwhelmed FTM

Sounds like you’re prepared and doing so many of the things I would recommend!

I have a strong letdown too and my little one struggles sometimes. I have a muslin to hand and if she unlatches or I unlatch her cause I think she’s struggling, I just hold the muslin to my boob to take the let down and then put her back on. That’s also when I’ll be more focused on burping her too as I know she took on air.

Through the night, I would definitely stop waking her for feeds. I had an oversupply with my first and I’d either have a haakaa pump to hand for quick relief to stop engorgement or hand express into the bathroom sink. Especially as you seem to be damaging your nipples which can eventually lead to blocked ducts or milk blebs!

And then lastly I just recommend reading this post and why things may feel like they’re changing https://www.instagram.com/p/C9mlmgENTrO/?stkn=Z2V6Z2ZobGc0ZWFp

You’re doing amazing xx

Im struggling and my partner doesn't get it

Im 2 weeks postpartum and im really struggling, im not saying ive been a saint during our relationship because ive been far from it, I know my partner is struggling to create a bond with our daughter but I feel so alone, ive done every night feed, every day feed and everything else in-between, he does things such as washing bottles etc but i feel like im running on empty, im really struggling with an identity crisis and I feel like an imposter in my own body, it was also a traumatic birth which replays in my mind all day every day and im struggling with that, I do suffer with my mental health but I have never felt more alone then I do right in the moment, I think my partner feels neglected in some way and he believes that I dont make an effort like I used to but how can I do anything when I do feel and look like myself anymore, im honestly really struggling

Holiday with a toddler at night

What does everyone do on holiday when staying in a hotel with a toddler?

Our toddler has had his own room at home since he was a baby, so we’ve never really had to share a room with him. We tried a hotel room when he was younger and it was an absolute car crash. He kept waking up, seeing us and wanting to play! We tried putting him in bed with us and he just thought it was play time bouncing on the bed. We didn’t sleep for a week.

We’re going to Greece in 3 weeks and have booked a suite, but unfortunately the bedroom is open plan with no divider between our bed and our toddler’s bed.

Has anyone used anything to create a bit of separation in a hotel room that actually works? A travel room divider, blackout screen, curtain or anything similar? Would love to hear what you’ve used!

Americans please can I have your opinions

My kid has been in school in the UK and has learnt all sight words and can read fluently. He is in grade 1 in America now and while doing sight words was graded as incorrect for his pronunciation of the word 'been,' he said it as in 'seen,' 'keen,' or even 'bean' but the teacher said that the correct pronunciation is 'bin' as in 'sin' or 'in' with a 'buh' sound at the beginning (I hope I'm making sense)

Before I say anything to the teacher I'd like to get your thoughts. What is correct?

Welp...

The feeling when your baby is sleeping peacefully so you get yourself ready for bed (a rarity) and snuggle into bed when all of a sudden you hear him take the world's biggest poop 😭 and the kicker is, he fussed for a second then FELL BACK ASLEEP. Like this is the ONE time I need you to stay awake so I can change your diaper.... Then you can fall back asleep 😭😭 send help

My baby has been sleeping since his dream feed at 10.30pm and it is now 3.30am - he’s formula fed and putting on weight just fine x
