Do you ever smack?

So I have a 24 month old and starting on our disciplinary journey. I watched an episode of supernanny where a 4 year old was screaming, kicking, hitting, spitting and generally out of control all day and it scared the shit out of me because I know im quite soft and sensitive and not always good at discipline. My mum already says my boy is way more wilful than I was.
How do you discipline? Many were saying the boy in super nanny needed a good smack...i don't like this idea but I see the need for it sometimes...
Any feedback welcomed

well it's against the law in Wales, but it's wouldn't anyway.

I was born in Portugal so ‘smacks’ were part of the discipline growing up, not beating just a smack. I personally wouldn’t do that because there’s other ways to discipline our children other than violence so yeah.

Smacking is cruel and lazy parenting. Teaching a child not to do something out of fear isn't raising them, it isn't teaching them right from wrong, it's just teaching them that you will hurt them. I wasn't honest with my parents because I was scared of being hurt. I want to be a safe space for my daughter. You can set boundaries and stick to them without ever needing to hurt your child.

Ngl I have tapped my child's hand once or twice when they wouldn't listen about touching something but I would never smack them to the point my parents did me

That boy on super nanny if he was 4, and that out of control, he's clearly never been displined or taught correctly from when the issues first started, and that's why his behaviour is so out of control.

I have a 5 year old and 2 year old, and they're both well-behaved, good manners, and really kind. I've never spanked them

I think it’s also worth looking at it from the child’s point of view. If a child doesn’t listen mum or dad gets angry and smacks them, what are they actually learning from that?

They might start to think that when someone doesn’t listen to you or doesn’t give you what you want hitting, biting is an okay response. So if a friend takes their toy or they are told they can’t have the phone, why wouldn’t they think it’s okay to hit them too?

Smacking doesn’t really teach a child how to handle frustration or understand what they’ve done wrong. It can make them scared of you, while also teaching them that hurting someone is a normal way to deal with conflict.

I’m not saying this to judge anyone ❤️ parenting is hard, and nobody gets it right all the time. I just think it’s worth thinking about what our children are learning from the way we discipline them.

There is never a situation where smacking a child is necessary. I do not agree with it at all. I was given a good beating as a child by my dad and my mother would hit with objects- slipper- wooden spoon etc it’s the way they were raised. I hated them and I was embarrassed by the violent behaviour they displayed to us as this went on well into teenage years.
I could never imagine laying a hand on mine and I have no respect for anyone that would do the same to their child.

Definitely never okay no matter what they do they are little babies still learning their way through life the only way they learn is by us. When you hit that’s teaching them oh I when I get mad for someone to listen to me I should hit. So if you do smack all you’re gonna do is be teaching your child to hit you or others like at school when they get upset over something then you’ll have a bigger problem and that’s getting them to stop hitting. Always talk to them if they are kicking and yelling they learned it probably from watching others yell watch what you do and the people around you. you have to understand they can’t regulate emotions like us they need help every step of the way start by offering comfort and teaching breathing skills don’t talk about what they’ve done wrong until after they have stopped crying.

Americans please can I have your opinions

My kid has been in school in the UK and has learnt all sight words and can read fluently. He is in grade 1 in America now and while doing sight words was graded as incorrect for his pronunciation of the word 'been,' he said it as in 'seen,' 'keen,' or even 'bean' but the teacher said that the correct pronunciation is 'bin' as in 'sin' or 'in' with a 'buh' sound at the beginning (I hope I'm making sense)

Before I say anything to the teacher I'd like to get your thoughts. What is correct?
