Weaning questions from a firsttime mum

Hi mamas 🤍

I currently breastfeed my baby, who will be 6 months old this Friday. I’m thinking of starting weaning and also introducing Kendamil in the evenings.

Has anyone switched from exclusively breastfeeding to combination feeding around this stage? How did it go for you?

I also have a few questions:

-When should I start offering water?
-Can I begin with just one meal a day, for example oats/porridge in the morning, and continue breastfeeding for the rest of the day? Or should I be offering solids throughout the day from the start?

I’m feeling a bit unsure about what to do, so I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you.

Also, if I called my health visitor, would they be able to answer all of these questions?

Finally, would you suggest introducing formula alongside breastfeeding, or is it better to continue breastfeeding only if it’s going well?

Thank you so much in advance! 🤍

Following as I am just as clueless and apprehensive to start weaning. I'm contemplating subscribing to the solid starts app and I have bought a baby led meaning book as I want to avoid purees as much as possible. I've been told by the health visitor to stick to breast feeding as the food will initially irritate the tummy and breast milk has the enzymes to help with this. She said formula to a baby thats never had it before will also cause irritation. Not sure if anyone has had any experience with this.

I tried my LO with Kendamil last week as I have a KIT day coming up and was anxious I hadn't pumped enough and she drank it no problem but then was irritable all day and did the biggest poonami and just generally wasn't her usual happy self.

“Food before one is just for fun”

I’ve weaned lots of babies (I’m a nanny), you can start with just one meal a day definitely!!
There’s an app called ‘Solid Starts’ which has lots of info about weaning, how to serve different foods depending on age, and common allergens etc.

Whatever you do, just try not to stress about it - there will be gagging, foods baby doesn’t like right now and refuses but then loves in a weeks time 😅, they may eat nothing at all or lots and lots.
The bigger the deal we adults make around food, always ends up with bigger emotions from the child.

I always recommend doing a paediatric first aid course, or even watching some YouTube videos on what to do if your baby is choking, and how to recognise choking vs gagging. Xx

Definitely call the health visitor! They usually have a class/workshop they can send you on OR they’ll come out and chat to you themselves. You can start water when you start solids, one meal is fine unless they seem like they’re desperate for more (you’ll know!). Biggest thing is not over thinking it! They’re not getting much nutrition/calories from it so have fun, think of it more like a sensory activity than a full meal at the stage and get comfortable with mess!

We’ve been at it for a few weeks so it’s all very fresh, feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions/worries though! 😊

I started combi feeding both my kids around the same time as weaning and honestly just one bottle a day has made no difference. If you're doing it to improve sleep though it usually doesn't so I wouldn't do it just for that.

Unless it's hot I just offer water with every meal to start. Nhs actually recommends just one meal a day to start. It can be whatever meal you like then breast/ formula the rest of the day.

100% ask HV they will be able to help and point you to extra resources online
