Scared of long induction process

Mums! I’m 41+3 today according to NHS, but from my extremely type A tracking from December last year know I can only possibly be 40+4. My midwife has supported this throughout my pregnancy and has advocated for me to take it at my body’s pace and take the EDD with a pinch of salt.

I’ve been having signs of early labour - cramps, regular Braxton hicks, even a small show today following my second unsuccessful sweep - but I’m feeling SO pressured into being induced. It’s like the second you turn 40 weeks they jump on you to be induced and I just don’t get it.

More context:

My midwife told me today that there is potential to be on the ward with three other mums who will also be going through the induction process themselves and waiting for labour to start for up to 4 to 5 days (!!!), and that’s not even including the labour/recovery itself. I had hoped for spontaneous labour, water birth and limited time in the hospital, so hearing this, along with the failed sweep has been disheartening to say the least. Since my EDD came and went this week I have been having much stronger signs, and following the first sweep on Thursday when they said I wasn’t dilated but that the cervix was soft, to today being told the same but that it is now open shows me that there are clear signs my body is getting ready to do something.

I’ve been low risk this entire pregnancy, and will continue to have monitoring etc in line with my trust’s guidance, but following a meeting with a consultant at the hospital, the only real reason they could give for wanting to induce me is 1) because it’s protocol, and 2) in case the slots get taken up and I have to wait longer if I do decide to book one… her exact words… neither of which seem like valid reasons to me. The risks to me and baby are minimal at this point, as they have been all along, and I wonder why are we doubting that the body will be able to go into spontaneous labour after it has been trusted to grow an entire human from scratch for the past 40 weeks?

I do have a slot scheduled for 42 weeks, but feel so upset and unsettled at the prospect of forcing my body to go through a potentially lengthy process and wait on a hospital ward with no creature comforts just because it’s their ‘protocol’.

Sorry for the long post, any advice at all? 😓

Most babies globally are born at 41 weeks. I would be asking what the risks are that they are trying to mitigate with induction and then what risks are involved in induction and what is easier to mitigate. Also considering what type of birth you want etc.

Me personally I would continue as I was and just ask for regular monitoring to check health of baby and placenta - if it got to the point where induction was a necessity id choose a elcs (previous section anyway) just because id want to avoid instrumental or emcs.

And also sorry just re the end of your post re protocol AND THEY WONDER WHY C SECTION RATES ARE SO HIGH, why are they offering sweeps from 37w onwards to people absolutely insane. Chances are your body and baby know what to do.

Stay strong honestly! Dont feel pressured, I would give yourself another 48 hours before making any decisions. Things can change in a matter of hours.

I will say, I was induced with my first and they started me at 8am on a Tuesday and baby was born by 8pm on Thursday, so it was 3 days for me, so I stayed in for almost 4 days, I was 38+4 and I was soo not ready so the first two full days nothing was happening and I was actually just happy hanging out with my husband in a little bubble knowing baby would come within the next few days! So if you have that mindset, it can be quite nice! But I would honestly think it wont take that long for you if you have had an extra 2 weeks of your body getting ready!!

There is still time for your baby to come naturally however I do have a positive induction story. I was sent for induction 7pm on Mon 12. That did end up getting pushed back due to too many women in natural labour. I was sent to bed on the ward. Next morning 11am waters were broken & hormone drip was started. Laboured for around 5 hours daughter was born 4.44pm on Tue 13. Then Wed 14 less than 24 hours later we were sent home. Xx

I got induced and it took from 8 pm to about 10 pm the next day for me to have my baby. I only wish i got the epidural sooner? But i also wish my nurses had told me i was in labor sooner so i couldve know thats why i was in so much pain lol. This was my first baby though, i heard it can be a lot sooner if youve already had a baby

Regarding the dates I’m in the exact same position.
I tracked so strictly and my EDD based on my dates means I’m not 40 weeks till Tuesday 22nd, I also had a private internal scan at 6 weeks and also 9w 4days as I was in shock to be pregnant and needed it to sink in lol. They also matched my due date of 22/9. Then when I was exactly 12 weeks I had my 12 week NHS scan and they moved me to 13 weeks. A full week ahead. I instantly worried as I thought about induction and their dates etc…
I already have 4 children who are all older now. My first 3 babies were 6, 6 and 10 days late, all spontaneous. My 4th had to be induced around 10 days early at 38w 4D and it was awful. Took 3/4 days as my body wasn’t ready, breaking his waters caused him to go into distress and end up in the special care unit for 9 days, I was so worried whilst being monitored hearing his heart rate drop that my adrenaline was going high meaning the drop wouldn’t work as efficiently so it was really traumatic for me…..

Hi Ladies. I’ll be having my 3rd c section later this year. For others who’ve had 3 sections. What gestation did they make you go to with the 3rd? Thank you 🙏

Perineal massage

Genuine question - is the perineal massage really worth doing? I’m 33 weeks and debating on buying the oil and wand to do the stretch as I don’t reach down there comfortably anymore.

Does it actually work?
