Hydronephrosis

I went for my fetal medicine scan today at 34+6 and was told baby has 7.3mm fluid on right kidney. I have another growth scan at 36 weeks but they said if it’s still there they’ll monitor it after birth. Has anyone had the same and did it resolve on its own?

Hey,

I’m sorry you’ve received this news today! I think 7.3 is so minimal and given it’s only on one kidney I would say it’s very little to concern yourself over, and it’s just a waiting game for when they arrive.

I had a similar story but sadly my boy had dilatation on both kidneys and he ended up having a displasic kidney and is needing surgery but I would say our situation was a lot more significant than your findings.

They will monitor until birth and likely repeat scan on baby when they arrive. It could be an obstruction from the kidney to the bladder that’s caused it.

I was told 50% of cases resolved by birth. 20-30% shortly after birth and only a small amount require further intervention. Because it is so mild they will watch and wait for 6-12 months before they offer any surgery.

I will say that baby will be more susceptible to UTIs and could offer prophylactic antibiotics but we refused them and just exercise good hygiene and potty training from birth.
