Glucose Test

Anyone turned down the Glucose test?

Midwife booked me in for a Glucose test without talking about it with us first or letting us know we needed none. Letter says I need to be in the hospital waiting room for 3 hours between the test so I'll need to take the whole morning off work for it. Plus so will a family member as I'm awful with needles (passing out with panic attacks). Wondering if anyone has turned it down before, or know what the nhs's criteria is for offering jt? Neither of my sisters got offered the test when they were pregnant

I am thinking about it. Only because I’m the same with needles, have been pregnant twice before and didn’t have diabetes both times. But I’m worried about declining because I think I read symptoms aren’t always obvious? I’m not sure what to do 🙁 x

You should get paid for your time off work for it
The criteria is usually based off BMI I believe xx

Sorry meant to add, strange your sisters didn’t get offered it too! I’ve been offered it every time because my nan had diabetes and my sister was offered it too.. is it in your family anywhere perhaps?

You can do an alternative test at home by doing the finger prick, but it’s weeks of pricking and recording your numbers instead of just going in one time

This popped up on my explore page. The criteria (i think) is high bmi, diabetes in family or previous gestational diabetes. I had it with both my pregnancies. However, my friend refused to have it and they were fine about it. Completely your choice x

i refused and agreed to the at home test which is a lot easier i also have a bad fear of needles and also sick so i couldn’t do the drink one

I’m the same way. I waved it - they push everyone to take it for liability, most first-world countries only give it to at risk people… in America, that’s a sizable portion of population. I had my toddler with me and didn’t want her to see me fainting, etc and knew I was extremely low risk (less than 2%)

I had to get one due to how large my daughter was measuring and extra fluid. I don’t have any known diabetic diagnosis in my family. I have an insane needle fear but thankfully the test came back negative

I have a needle phobia too. I turned down the test in my first pregnancy so my midwife asked for the second one and I refused again and she was fine with it and said you can always do it later if you decide to

Hey hun I'm a midwife - off the top of my head criteria is usually

- previous gestational diabetes
- raised BMI
- Ethnicity (South Asian, Black, Hispanic etc)
- Age over 35
- Family history of diabetes
- Certain types of medication that you might be on

If your further along into your pregnancy if your baby is measuring larger than they expect they would offer one to you as well.

You absolutely can turn it down as it is your pregnancy and your choice what tests you would like.

When they do other routine blood tests in your pregnancy you can ask for a HBA1C to be added which will should if you have gestational diabetes

Additionally if later on in your pregnancy they suspect you may have gestational diabetes because of measurements then you can always do home glucose monitoring with a finger prick test- and then if that's too much for you still you can ask for a CGM device to do continuous monitoring without you having to prick yourself everyday.

There's always options xx

Hit 32weeks and bam I feel like I did in the first trimester but I’m not sure if it’s the RSV vaccination I had the other day!

I’ve been sick ooh I haven’t missed it! I hope it’s not coming back! Been in bed most the day I feel so drained! And feeling nauseous on and off! 😭

Anyone else feeling like dog shit!

Anyone else really emotional about there baby being 1? I’m pregnant with my second and I don’t know if it’s the hormones but I can’t help but cry at the thought she’s growing up 😂. I miss being pregnant for the first time and having the feeling of holding your first newborn 🥲 like to think il never get that back hurts my heart 😅 I’d love to do it all over again for the first time ( definitely doesn’t feel as surreal second time around).
