The spelling is what I need help with or should I change it

My daughter has a hyphenated last name. When I go into doctors offices I always have to say "her last name is hyphenated so it's blah-blah" and I'm just wondering if I have to do that or if I'm just making it harder for myself, and maybe I can use just one of the last names?
