My 8 month old has always been a great sleeper, I usually put him down for bed around 7-8pm (I’m not too strict, but this is usually when he gets tired) and he’ll sleep through until 7am. I’ve done this since he was 5 months old and it’s worked up until now. The past week or so he’s been falling asleep at 7pm (ish) but then waking up around an hour later hysterically crying and won’t go back down. He seems to realise he’s in his cot and not with us and cries so much I can’t get him back off to sleep in his room. Any advice on how to help settle him or improve his sleep again? Is this just something he’ll grow out of soon?

Sounds like the 8 month sleep regression. Have you tried introducing a comforter (soft toy/small blanket/muslin) that you can make smell like you, it doesn't work with every kid but my boys 7.5 months and he's got a little blanket with a star on the corner that he sleeps with and rubs the star against his face to soothe himself. Might be worth a go?
