Twirling hands

My MIL has really upset me by saying that my LO is showing abnormal hand movements. When they are sitting in the high chair for BLW they twirl their wrists and hands. I’ve now noticed that they also do it when I supporting them to sit. I’ve obviously googled and I’m finding either that it’s an early sign for Autism or just babies still becoming aware of their extremities. I really wish the MIL hadn’t said it as she often has not tact, but she’s really upset me. My LO has great eye contact, is always happy and smiling, responds to their name and is starting to show signs they want to move and crawl and anyday now will sit unaided. I suppose I’m looking for a little reassurance. Is anyone else’s baby twirling their hands?

My baby does this constantly!! I have so many videos of her doing this in her highchair but even just sitting around playing with her things she looks so funny doing it but I'm certain it's just her being a baby... my little one is becoming more aware of her hands and watching them just be hands, she's started waving now and really concentrating on it so maybe it could be that? X

Our LG twirls and flaps her hands all the time. It’s very normal for babies to “stim” (stimulate) themselves as they figure out all these new feelings, sounds and sensations! I honestly wouldn’t pay any attention to your MIL and what she’s said, her son most likely would have done the same thing 🙄😂

@Tammi thank you this is really encouraging to hear. I find it cute too. I just need to work on ignoring the outlaw 😠

@Shana that’s really helpful what you’ve shared thank you so much and yes I’m sure he did!

@Lara James she must really love your cooking!!

My LO does it it’s normal their just seeing how everything moved

My baby does, too! Always moving his hands. It's way too early to detect Autism too. And, there's usually a big regression that happens before, so if they stopped crawling, holding toys or looking at you ect, and then the fascination with moving hands in a certain way started, then that could then point to Autism. I also have a MIL that pokes her nose in, so honestly, just ignore!

pretty sure it's just baby being baby, my girl does it all the time and I'm pretty sure it's just her remembering she has hands and exploring what they do and what the limits of them are x

My daughter does this with her hands. She stares at them while she does it and seems so fascinated.

My LB flaps his arms and hits himself to sleep all the time. He twirls his hands too. If my MIL said anything I’d tell her to bugger off he’s a baby and doing baby things. I’d only be concerned later on. (As it is a possibility for my boy due to him having cysts on his brain when he was tiny)

@Josie it makes sense hey! Thank you

@Sophie I feel extra sensitive since becoming a Mum but I could never say such a thing to someone for fear of offending them, but yes I’ve just got to try my best to ignore her

@Sophie thank you for sharing x

@laura that makes sense thank you 🙏🏻

My baby started doing this at 6 months, does it often. I think it's just getting better with hands. She also smiles at people, good eye contact, laughs at funny voices etc. No other autism signs

My daughter also does this when she is sitting in her high chair! I was just like you overthinking it, but after talking about it with some mom friends, I realized it’s her just understanding how her hands work. It absolutely eased my racing mind! She plays with her toys, has good eye contact, sits by herself, rolls, and is very vocal (yelling, blowing raspberries and the bababa’s). I think as FTM we worry constantly, and my anxiety is always at 100, but that just makes us amazing mamas!

Hey, how’s your baby now? Mine has just started doing this at 6 months and Google has got me worried 😟
