We had our 4 week check from the health visitor yesterday and she confirmed we’re basically overfeeding our boy by about 4-5 ounces per day, based on his weight (he’s formula fed). We’ve been told to try smaller feeds, giving small amounts of cooled boiled water or changing formula (on Aptamil currently). Does anyone have any experience with this and can give any other advice? Smaller feeds just result in him screaming for more food, and the cooled boiled water essentially has same effect. I’m so anxious about feeding and almost scared to feed him at each feed now in.case he wants too much 😭

You can’t give plain water to a 4 week old.

her pediatrician told her to so I don’t understand why she couldn’t? I thought you shouldn’t give them water so they don’t fill up on it as to not inhibit growth but with him he is over eating so they could be letter her try it out so he doesn’t over eat and maybe the water might give him a “fuller” feel. Just my guess though.
Also, if you have been over feeding him and having to cut back he could be crying because maybe his stomach stretched a little bit with too heavy of feeds so he may feel hungrier for a bit but maybe just try it for a day or two and see if he adjusts. I know it’s awful hearing your baby cry and thinking they are hungry! Just a suggestion. I hope you get through it! Trust your mom gut though. If you feel like your baby is doing ok then maybe try to just cut back his feed by like 1 or 2 ounces at a time instead of all at once.

oh I’m sorry 4 week I thought it said 4 month old. Yeah they shouldn’t have water so that’s super weird. Hopefully that wasn’t advice from the pediatrician.

My LG used to overfeed, we gave a dummy, did the job of stopping it x

Cooled boiled water is for dehydration only, the HV should not advise this. Please stop giving water to your 4 week old. It is for very very hot weather or when baby is sick.
Feed your baby when they need feeding. They cannot overeat, they have the ability to stop eating when full. I'm disgusted you have been told this.

Maybe your baby is cluster feeding or maybe he just needs to burped longer.. Sometimes, babies give the same cues when they are hungry or need. Mine did the same at 4 weeks. So we would try different methods of burping her first before trying to give her an ounce. I didn't want to stretch her feedings, if she was hungry. Every baby I'd different so if you tried Burping and your baby is hungry feed him just an ounce more. Babies will stop eatting if they are full.

I second trying a pacifier and extra burping but coming from someone who was also told I’m over feeding (breastfeeding but still) don’t let it stress you out too much, some babies just need to eat more. And you’re feeding log looks pretty normal to me I’ve read that as long as baby isn’t spitting up a lot or having other gastro issues,it’s okay if they’re eating a lot and gaining a lot… I also would be very cautious about giving baby water

You can’t overfeed a baby so that’s stupid
They’re not supposed to have cooled boiled water either
Personally I would carry on just feeding him or try a dummy first as he might be using it to soothe

I agree with the above. My baby is almost 9 months old now but looked at her feeds from about 4 weeks old and I was feeding her the same amount/sometimes more as that’s jus what she needed and was never accused of overfeeding. I don’t think there’s any such thing? You know your baby so just keep going the way you are I would say.

Well you said your baby is 4 weeks and you feed him 710ml if you check this page it basically says you giving him 10ml more whats he needs but it also all depends from his weight. My boy is 6 weeks old and mixed feeding and is on boobie a lot but still top him up with formula 120/150ml because he was a big boy at birth. Every baby is different

You can’t overfeed a baby, they will only take what they want/can handle. If they aren’t vomiting then they are not overfed. If he was taking milk and bringing lots back up during or after feeds then I would say he’s overfed. But if he is happy and settled after then no problem.
My boy is a big hungry baby - 7 weeks and takes 5oz 3-4hrly. He’s 98th percentile and weighs 14lb. HV said to continue to feed on demand as long as he’s not vomiting- he was 9lbs when born so just going to be a big boy.
Your doing great 💕
