Sleep Training Advice

Hi! My baby is 4 months and 2 weeks, and I decided to start sleep training. I decided to do whichever is best for both. We have the same routine every night, which is bath, lotion, pajamas, breastfeeding, and put my baby drowsy but awake in his bed that is next to mine. At 11 p.m., he wakes up to eat, and I pick him up and breastfeed him. That is the last meal I've been giving him for the last 3 days. Then, he wakes at 3:30 a.m., but I just let him cry. I tried to offer comfort, but he cries even more. The 1st night, he cried for 3 minutes and fell asleep. The 2nd night, he cried for 30 mins and fell asleep, and the 3rd night was the same. I don't want to let him cry because it breaks my heart! Are u doing sleep training? Is it working? Is my baby too young to start now? Any advice is welcome!! Thank you

He could be waking due to hunger.

@Jenna Turner Do you think at 3 am I should keep breastfeeding him? I'm thinking about doing it tonight. Honestly, I have two older children, and I never did sleep training with them. They just stopped waking up at night at 6 months.

I would say so, my youngest son is 4 months and 1 week and every time he wakes in the night it’s because of hunger so I nurse him back to sleep and there’s no crying involved. I’d think maybe if he was waking more often I would say sleep regression and to sleep train, but if he’s going a 4.5 hour stretch then waking up crying it’s most likely hunger mama ❤️

Babies change so often, they go through hungrier phases from growth spurts but also it’s just completely normal to wake up 1-3 times a night up until a child is a year old. It won’t create a bad habit if you feed on demand in the night in my opinion, your just caring for your little babe! I would forsure feed at 3am he’s likely hungry, as long as your mental health is ok with doing so

I think it might be a little soon. From what I’ve read, it’s really best to start more towards 5 or 6 months. If I want my girl to sleep from 7pm-7am, she eats at 1am and 4am. She goes right back to sleep so I don’t mind. I truly think she’s hungry.

Babies wake up in the middle of the night to protect mothers supply and it still helps protect them against SIDS. 4 months is also when a sleep regression happens and they start having more adult like sleep cycles like we do.

It's probably to early to start sleep training but also is your choice, just keep in mind that if your baby is waking up in a 3-4 hours cue after the last feed that is hunger, and that also means your baby is not ready to sleep training, cause he/she still doesn't have the capacity to consume enough milk to support a whole night of sleep. This usually happens with bf babies cause they tend to eat less and more often.

4 month sleep regression. 🥺 At 7 months is when you don’t have to breastfeed at night for nutrition. My partners sleep consultant cousin recommends sleep training at 6 months.

So during this time they're going through the 4 month sleep regression it may not be wise to try and sleep train just yet as their needs will be different every day. It also sounds like they're waking hungry crying and giving up because you aren't giving them milk try feeding tonight

Thank you all for your opinions. Yesterday, we had a wonderful night of waking up and breastfeeding 🥰. I decided to follow my baby's cues. So, no sleep training until I see that he really needs it.

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

Did I overreact?

I have had 3 c sections, recently had a wisdom teeth removal (4) to be exact and all my mom did was visit the day BEFORE and then she only sent 1 text. She has NEVER spent one full day with me and doesn’t acknowledge my achievements much. She just isn’t there when I need her to be. She claims she’s always working but she lives like 7 minutes away! she can come help with the kids so my husband can have break? we don’t ask her for much and she only sees the kids 1-2 a month. She also didn’t visit with my last c section. I told her that she should’ve gotten the abortion when she had the chance with me because why would you have me and neglect me emotionally? To not actually give me a present father in my life. I am very angry all she does is disappoint me. She only wants to show up for certain people in the family and I just want to grab her and shake her and ask her why can’t she be a good present mother?
