Confusion About Appointments

Hi guys,
Sorry there have been a few posts about appointments, but I just wanted to reach out and get some advice. It is my first pregnancy and I also didn't grow up in this country so I don't know much about the health care system in general and how it all works.

I told my GP I was pregnant and they said they'd refer me to the midwives who would be in touch to organise a a first appointment. They said at that appointment my 12 week scan would be booked in.

I have now received a letter in the mail with my 12 week scan appointment details. I still haven't heard anything about just a regular first appointment. Is my scan meant to be the very first thing? And who should I contact about this? The GP, midwives, hospital? Are they all different people? I'm not sure who my go-to contact at this stage is as it feels like I'm being handballed around.

Hope that makes sense. Just worried I'm going to slip through the cracks and miss something.

You should contact your GP or Midwife, and they will make sure you are booked in for all of the correct appointments you need at each stage :) x

Sounds like they’re doing your booking in and 12 week scan at the same time.

Hi ☺️
Your first appointment should be a booking appointment at earliest 8 weeks. They're probably going to contact you but I understand it's anxiety inducing not knowing and waiting so I suggest you just call the midwives and get booked in! It's just a long chat about your health etc x

Sorry I've just noticed you're in Worcester, you're not under Worcester Royal are you? My sister happens to be a midwife there, happy to ask her for you!

The first appointment is your booking appointment, and will be with the midwife. This should be between 8-12 weeks. The midwife should get in contact with you to book this in although sometimes they are a bit slow. Sounds like the hospital (which is where your scan will be) is just quicker at getting your 12 week scan booked. X

I think I am! That would be awesome thank you. I don't really know how to contact the 'midwives' to find out, as I haven't had any contact to or from them yet, my GP referred me but I don't have info, and now have heard from the hospital. Really confused about it all but guess I just need to wait a few more weeks and see if someone gets in touch.

First Midwife Appointment

I had my first midwife appointment yesterday, I've been left full of worry is this normal?

She came to my house, she was so lovely I do feel lucky to have such a good midwife. The meeting was about an hour and a half.

There was so much information to take in I was very overwhelmed!
She went through all the scans testing etc, I never knew there could be so much 'wrong' with a baby. I have now booked an early scan I am freaking out.

I've been googling statistics all morning

Braxton Hicks vs early labour — anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced going into labour with only Braxton Hicks contractions — so more like discomfort or tightening rather than actual pain — and not realising that labour had started.
I’m currently 39+3 and had a sweep yesterday. I’m already 1 cm dilated, baby is 1/5 engaged, and the midwife said she could feel the baby’s head. My cervix is soft and short, so all the signs seem positive — it feels like we’re just waiting for baby to arrive now.
During my appointment, the midwife also noticed I was having 2–3 contractions (just tightening in my bump) without any pain. She mentioned that some women can go into labour without realising it and advised me to keep an eye on them. She even suggested that what I’ve been feeling so far might be what’s helped me get to this stage.
So I’d love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience — I know it’s not impossible!
Thank you 😊

What if I don’t want an induction?

Hi everyone, I’m 39+1 weeks, my next midwife appt is on my due date which I am happy about however hope I go into labour before then. I have had slight twinges and small pains, however nothing has happened yet and I am gutted as I really don’t want any type of induction. Say I get to 41+ weeks, and I don’t want any type of induction, what happens then? This might be a very silly question but my midwife isn’t helpful and would rather hear from others as opposed to doctor Google. Thanksss! X

Pressure down there?

Hi recently I've noticed when I'm walking I feel pressure 'down there' specifically my urethra, feels like I need to empty my bladder but I don't. Is this just baby's position? It's so uncomfortable

Soft spot concern

I took my little boy into the doctors for a chest infection earlier and they said she concerned over his soft spot hasn't closed yet and is quite sunken.. but he's not dehydrated and putting on weight well, so have done some type of advice and guidance to paeds and said they may want to look at his brain/head or may be nothing, called a doctor in and he said he'd never seen anything like it even working in paeds, which has now made me worry. Anyone else had the same or similar?🥺😭
