My 3 month old aggressively thrashes his head from side to side when he wakes up during the night. He is in a next to me cot, and it’s the banging of his head on my mattress that wakes me first before he even begins to cry. He also grabs and claws at his face. Health Visitor said it sounds normal but to me he looks like he is possessed and it’s scary to watch. I am seeing the GP, but wondering if anyone has had this before and if there is anything I should specially ask the GP to look into/ consider?
He has always done it but as he’s getting bigger it’s getting more aggressive. During the day he is very happy and doesn’t do it when awake, and not as bad during naps. He is 98th centile and hitting all his milestones. He is EBF.

It does sound like normal hunger signals, moving his head side to side is usually how they look for the boob. Clawing at their face is quite common too. But if you say it looks scary to watch, maybe try to record it next time so at least you can show your health visitor/gp exactly what you mean without being passed off as ‘it’s just normal’

My baby does the same head shaking while I try to put her down for sleep. The doctor said it was a soothing thing but I personally feel like it’s more that she’s trying to stay awake. I think it’s just a normal part of development so I wouldn’t worry too much. But if you are still concerned you can always go get a second opinion.
