Mucous in poop *apologies photo in post*

Hello All!

I feel theres been a similar post not too long ago but I can’t remember the advice.
Our 16 week old boy is breastfed and has been dribbling a lot more recently. He’s been increasingly gassy (assuming it’s from all the swallowing he’s doing) and has been pooping mucous whenever he passes wind.

It’s not a lot and he is feeding as usual (plus plenty of wet nappies).

Is the mucous poop likely to be linked to the start of teething/ swallowing more saliva?

If so does it eventually slow down and ease or would it be this way until teeth erupt in a couple months? We’re going through plenty of nappies (!) as I don’t want him to sit in it and make his rash worse!

Thank you!

Hi, my little one will be 4 months at the end of the month and had exactly the same! I spoke to a Doctor and if it is a single episode, there is no concern about it. However, in case it is always like that, it might be an allergy to milk protein. In our case, my LO (which is only on breast milk) had a lot of episodes with mucous, so I was told to do not eat anything with milk/ butter/ cheese. In our case the appearance improved, so my LO can have allergy to milk protein.

The mucus is likely from swallowing saliva. Wind is unlikely swallowing air as that’s from the lower GI but my boy is suddenly windy too.

Not linked to teething, it’s the salivary glands starting working & stimulated from putting hand/object in mouth. Can’t say if it’ll slow down.. not there yet 😁

You could eliminate dairy if they’re showing other signs of CMPA. You eliminate it for 12 weeks & then reintroduce it & see if there’s a reaction basically. By that point you may have started weaning if they’re meeting the criteria so you’d want to do the milk/dairy ladder

ah interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s the first instance of it happening - he’s been like this since Tuesday.
So nothing has really changed in my diet since he’s been born. I just have milk in my coffee and porridge - haven’t increased dairy consumption.
Will certainly keep monitoring and look into cutting out dairy if it continues. Thank you

thanks Tanya - always insightful!
So he isn’t showing any other symptoms of CMPA (i had a google of them)… maybe it’s just the extra saliva he is swallowing.

Anyway i will keep an eye on it and consider the dairy elimination if it goes on for longer.

Thank you

just a thought… it’s nothing to do with foremilk hindmilk production right? I know they say if the baby is doing too many short feeds then they could just be getting foremilk which changes the poop?

Absolutely no need to be worried about foremilk or hindmilk unless babe isn’t gaining weight (even then you don’t need to be worried about it but more give them more milk through opportunity. Foremilk & hindmilk is rather outdated now

Olivia Hinge IBCLC has a great video on fore/hind milk and why there’s no reason to worry. Basically the milk gets fattier as the feed progresses but doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the milk at the start.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but it came up when I searched. My LG is also having mucousy poop (EBF) for a few days now. Did yours eventually stop? She’s 5 months and hasn’t had this before x

Avatar

my boy still have mucusy poo & he’s 6mo, it’s the saliva x

Avatar

thanks so much! Is it okay if the poo is a bit runnier? I thought it might be the saliva as she’s literally got bubbles in her mouth all the time. X

Ours settled to usual breastfed poops - sweet smelling, mustardy colour etc. (he’s now 23 weeks) but there will still be the odd day where its mucousy. Certainly can link it to the increase in saliva and drooling!

8 week immunisations

My 8 week old has his first set of injections tomorrow and I’m abit nervous. Does anyone have any advice for after the jabs? I know they get a temp after so have got some calpol to give just before hand. Should I put him to bed in less clothing to make sure he doesn’t get too hot? Any tips from your experience with first set of immunisations? Am I worrying more than I need to? 😅

11 month old constantly standing in cot

Please tell me someone has some advice for this cause wow it’s trying. My almost 11 month old is fully on the move now and his new favourite thing is repeatedly pulling to stand in his cot. The problem is that he wears a sleep sack (mainly so his legs don’t get stuck between the bars tbh lol) so he’s not stable enough to lower himself down. So earlier he fell backwards and hit is head and now we feel like we can’t just leave him to it. Typically it’s his first full day at nursery tomorrow and my first day back at work IT’S LIKE HE KNOWS!!
Please tell me someone has some tips. Currently we are quietly placing him back on his back every time but he just keeps doing it! 🤣🤡

Took 9 week old to a family party where there was loud music and she was next to the speaker for most of the time (about 3 hours). She slept through most of it. Do you think she has hearing loss from this?

Freaking out right now :(

Bedtime

What time are you getting your LOs down for the night now and how are you finding bedtime? We’ve had the sane routine since my daughter was a few weeks old - bath with her older sister and 6.45, followed by a bottle and ideally in bed by 7.30. This worked at first but over the last few weeks she’s been fighting it a lot and, with the exception of a few days last week which were a lot easier, it’s a bit of a battle to get her down and features a lot of screaming and resettling. Not sure if we are putting her down too early or late? Her last nap is usually a cat nap (30-45 mins) and finishes by 6. She’s pretty good at settling herself from a night feed, but seems to be unable to do it at bedtime, even with her dummy.
