I’m EBF my 5 week old but she usually takes 45-60 minutes per feed as I have to give her both boobs and I’m having to use nipple shields & usually a feeding pillow in order to get a good latch in a comfortable position so it’s not ideal for getting out & about.
If I wanted to pump a bottle to give her while out, when is the best time to try i.e., straight after a feed, an hour after etc?

Highly recommend using a Hakka once per boob per day on the opposite side while baby feeds, you will build up a stash in no time xx

oh amazing thanks! I usually have to give her both boobs for a full feed, guessing I could just swap it over as well?

Yes you could do but you might not get as much from the other side after baby has fed, just be careful about baby kicking it off etc too.. I usually would get 1-2oz per feed so about 3-4oz a day and that built up a lovely freezer stash without giving me an oversupply (always keep an eye on that and pump less if u feel ur supply is jumping up too much) xx

You should reach out to an IBCLC and get assessed. Why is baby taking 45-60 minutes? Why do you have to offer both breasts? Lots of questions

we have been seen by the feeding specialists at our hospital who said there’s no physiological issues & I should offer both breasts as I think one side has lower supply so was encouraged to offer that side first to increase supply. I also mentioned it to our health visitor and she said it was normal for babies to feed for 30+ minutes & tbf she usually only goes to an hour if she’s sleepy & gets too cosy snuggled up to me but I didn’t realise that could be a sign of something wrong :/

I don’t want to alarm you! My next question would be is she actually eating for all 60 minutes or is it 20-30 minutes of eating and then 30 minutes of suckling? You can offer both sides but ideally it would be at least 15-20 minutes on one side and then offer the other side.
When you saying feeding specialist do you mean a trained lactation consultant? Feel free to PM if you have more questions.

This is usually why I say see an IBCLC in person so they can get the full history and story etc

not at all, I just want the best for her! on my right side I can defo tell when she’s eating as the let down is quite fast so I can hear her guzzling, she’s usually finished after 15 mins on that side but the left side she takes over 20 mins and I can’t hear the guzzling as much as I think my supply is lower on that side so it’s hard to tell! I worry about taking her off till she’s stopping so she gets all the hind milk
I’m not sure if we have NHS hospital lactation consultants in UK tbh - they’re specialist midwives & support workers, they were amazingly helpful in the beginning but only available for the first 28 days after birth 🙄

I’m Scotland we have the breastfeeding buddies, not sure if it’s where you are but even get on Facebook and look for local groups I’m sure there will be something xx
