My boyfriend is bad with money and therefore has said he will get his wage put into a joint account so I can see what he’s spending etc
Good or bad idea ?

Bad BAD idea.
1. On your credit report he’ll be known as a ‘linked person’ and your credit will go down for being linked to him
2. He’ll have access to your money just as much as you’ll have access to his
3. Sharing an account won’t suddenly make him better at spending money!
If he’s really serious then you need to sit down and figure out how much of his pay you need, set up a direct debit/direct deposit to your account and make all the bills come out of your account on that same day.
I’m very good with money so DM me if you need more advice. Don’t get a joint account.
he has said about putting the money into my account and I manage it. But I stupidly mentioned a joint account and now he has that in his head 🤦♀️ I don’t want him to feel I’m taking his independence so don’t know where to go from here x

Defo stay away from a joint account. I considered one with my ex and spoke to my uncle who's a financial advisor and he said because my ex was on an iva it'll mark on my credit too and any issues he got himself in whike having the joint account would reflect on me too. The best thing to do is have his wages go to him him send them to you you sort out all the bills and then what's left give him an allowance of until he learns to manage his money and if he wastes it quickly he gets no more. The same way you teach teens money independence is what would probably work for him especially if he's aware of his issues and wants to fix it xx
no we haven’t got one yet x
yeah good idea. Just difficult isn’t it!! Feel like I’ve got 2 kids lol x

A joint account will give him access to both of your finances, bad idea.
he’s the main earner. I only bring in like £700 a month x
thank you. I’ll steer clear of it! Will see what he says tonight x

it'll still impact on her credit unfortunately

Bad. Bad. Why don't you sit down together and write a budget. Have a joint account where bills come out of, but neither of you touch aside from that. Then in his account whatever you've allocated for 'spendings' then he still has his own identity and spending ability. I think it would be so harmful for both of you to be questioning spends etc. Especially if he's bad with money it sounds like an ongoing argument that will end in big time resentment on both sidds

So... I'm going against the majority and saying it depends.
My husband was always good at making money, but never transferring the money to pay the bills. For years I handled his finances and mine, before I rage joint all the accounts so that I only had one set of finances.
We have budgets for everything and he does well to save up before spending money. Now a days all our bills are automated so it's even easier for me to manage and I just got to review the CC transactions to ensure his card isn't compromised (used to happen once a year cause he worked all over).
Depending on where you live and how long you have been together, joint accounts or not, his debt is your debt and vice versa.
