My baby boy is 11 days old and I am exclusively breastfeeding. My mum in law who is a GP from back home said that I have to have a very strict diet while I am breastfeeding this means no vegetables, fruit, nuts, chocolate/sugar, no milk (Greek yogurt and plain cottage cheese is ok but limited) so it means I need to eat only meat, pasta, bread, oats (no granola though), rice, buckwheat - it is because she said that the baby can get allergies and become colic. I checked NHS website, asked a few midwives and other breastfeeding mums and no one agrees with this diet, everyone said I have to have a balanced diet including vegetables and fruit. We had one episode when the baby was very active and was quite grumpy and didn’t want to nap the entire day, so my mum in law assumed he has colic and blamed me for eating vegetables and fruit (she diagnosed him remotely as she is not with us) Is anyone who is breastfeeding on a strict diet as above or heard about it? If so, how do you survive? Since I gave birth I am getting very constipated and the vegetables and fruit were helping me but now it is worse and I cannot be on laxatives all the time. Feel free to share any ideas, advice you think could help, thanks

My doctor told me to eat healthy, but not change my diet. Eat everything. Of course, if you eat a bowl of cabbage and notice your baby has gas/colic don't do it again, but your baby will adapt to your diet, according to the pediatrician

I never changed anything when I was breastfeeding

Definitely eating a balanced diet that includes vegetables and fruits! These things have vital nutrients for you and bub. GPs don’t typically get a lot of training in nutrition and diet, so I’m not sure what your MIL is basing this on (unless she’s gone on to do further training). But honestly, her advice goes against any advice I’ve ever seen for breastfeeding mums. Plus, diagnosing something from afar based on the events of a single day sounds like pretty poor practice. I would say she’s just trying to be helpful and concerned. It’s not okay that she’s blaming you, though.
If you’re really worried your baby might have colic, go to see a paediatrician or other medical practitioner who has expertise in this area. But the diet your MIL is suggesting sounds very wrong to me.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Morgan! It is very helpful. I asked my GP about cow’s milk and he said there is very low clinical evidence that mum’s diet gets into the milk to affect the new born. we had an episode of him crying inconsolably for a few hours one night and had to call 111 and go and see a doctor in the morning. So the doctor’s conclusion was colics which he said will go away at 3-4 months… still around 2 months to go. We started giving him baby probiotics in the morning, colief and infacol and he seems to have less cries in the evening and sleeps better.. but his naps are gone now 🙄😓
