Below 1st percentile head diameter

I’m not seeking medical advice, I’ve text my midwife and will be asking for another scan.

Today I had my 20 week scan and was told my baby’s head diameter was below the 1st percentile, it’s measuring 45mm (I’m 20+6). My scanner told me he’s not worried but surely any thing THAT small is worrying. He didn’t seem to be very experienced, he didn’t tell me the gender - in his words he forgot to look…but I can always get a private if I wanted. He didn’t look at the heart beat until I asked to see it and didn’t even realise the head was small until I left the waiting room and he chased me down the hall to get another scan done to check.

Someone please give me some advice / reassure me or just something.

I think what you have done is correct - I would insist to have another scan done and take all scanned images to a professional. I used to work in a hospital and I understand everyone has to learn but if they aren’t doing their job or not accompanied by someone more experienced that’s not right…and the scanners attitude is not helpful or kind on a new Mama…the gender is such a big moment and they should ask if you want to know at the start! I hope everything is well and you are doing the right thing. I have had three scans so far - two at 20 weeks because baby wasn’t playing ball and they couldn’t check everything so had to come back but each of them have been different…some kind and some not so much…it really is the luck of the draw…sorry you had to go through this and wishing you the best

when he told me the head was looking small he literally said “oh I need to re measure the head and add on a bit because it shouldn’t be that low, and wrote on the paper which has all the measurements his new “estimated” measurement.

I get people have to start somewhere, and if this is the first time he’s come across a problem when he’s been on his own I do get he might not know what to do, but this could be something serious that he’s pretty much told me to ignore. Or if I’m worried to tell my midwife and get her to look into it.

I’m really just hoping he’s done something wrong and there isn’t anything wrong with the baby

Definitely make sure your midwife takes you seriously and I'd even maybe make a small complaint to the department you're using, as this isn't fair on a pregnant mama 😞

Do you think he’s possibly missed a 1 off the 45 ? As my baby’s head at 20 weeks was 181mm but is measuring big? Definitely get a rescan and keep us updated 💓

Agree with - I think he must have missed the 1 off (my baby was 151mm and told they were a little on the small side, but nothing to be concerned about at the moment). Definitely ask for a re-scan and chat all of this through with your midwife x

I hope so too…I think what the other have said is right and he’s most probably made a mistake - keep us posted lovely. Sending you all the best wishes

sorry I should’ve explained better, it’s for the BPD which is the diameter, the HC (head circumference) is small, but within normal range and that’s 175 so I assume it’s correct.

My midwife never replied to me and so I’ve phoned triage and they’re ringing me back within the week to sort out what’s next xx

little update,

So basically the scanner wasn’t even meant to measure the thing that’s too small, apparently the NHS stopped doing that because the machines they use aren’t accurate enough. My scans/measurements have been sent off to a specialist just to confirm what she’s told me, but basically it’s nothing to worry about xx

Great to hear, what a relief! I am happy for you - take care of yourself mama ☺️

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

Almost 37 weeks + told to do another growth scan

I just had my second to last doctor’s appointment this morning, and my OB told me she wants me to do another growth scan because my belly is measuring small. She says it’s probably just because I’m a smaller woman, but they like to be safe. It’s hard to hear though, since I just did one a couple months ago.

I did this with my firstborn around this time of pregnancy, so I do think I just carry smaller (even though I don’t feel like I look “small” at all). My first baby was 6lbs 15oz when she was born at 41 weeks + 2 days. I’m having this baby at 39 weeks on April 7. I hope she’s still at least 6lbs.

Anyone have any stories similar to this?
