Am I overreacting? Long one!

I am not particularly fond of my MIL. But we still visited around 3x a year once COVID hit back in 2019. Her and the rest of my partners family live 4h30 drive away.

As of 2021, I told my partner he could go and visit them more frequently, but I wouldn’t. I didn’t have many vacation days from work and I’d prefer to spend it abroad instead of feeling like I was wasting my holidays by being stuck in her house.

She is 50yo and has 7 children, the youngest being 5yo. They are ALL BOYS.

Turns out I got pregnant and had my baby girl during August 2022.

My partner and I have been together for 6 years and throughout every year at some point he had to give her money. She does not work, lives of benefits and has broken up with her 2nd long life partner and just goes on dates now and in my opinion uses the men to pay for her house/kids.

I never cared, but since having my own baby I find it ridiculous that she is not ashamed of using my partner for money. Always crying and being oh I can’t pay electricity, I can’t do this, I have to buy everything in reduced etc etc etc. the other 4 kids are older, in their mid to late 20 (my partner is 27) and she never asks them for help, just my partner and we are the only one with a child. We are not financially struggling but we can’t save money for my baby’s future at all. Yet he gives her 200 a month. And all her kids are at school now, and she just sits on her ass all day.

Since my baby girl was born we went over 3 times, and I swore never again. My baby screamed and cried the whole journey. Choked and was sick multiple times, I cried the whole time. Yet, she made an effort to come see us ONCE and complained the whole time because her younger kids (5yo and 8yo) are bored in the car and their routines are messed up. Well my baby wouldn’t settle in her house and there’s like 10/12 of us when visiting, as everyone visits together and too much noise.

It’s her birthday in December and now my partner wants to go. I can’t do it. My baby does not sleep in the car, only has one nap a day and it’s not doable 4h30. We tried a 3h journey last month and we had to make an emergency stop on a hard shoulder cause she got so sick she was purple and inconsolable.

Now everyone is bitching about me making it seems like it’s not about me and it should be all about her because EVERYONE will be there for her birthday and I’m keeping her soon and granddaughter away from them….

In order to go my partner now is planning a 2 day trip! Drive 2h stay in a hotel, do the other 2h:30 the next day. Stay for 4 days and the same journey back. Feels too much for someone who does not make an effort and wants me to put my baby in this situation and make an effort for them??? I should add she always sends me bday card and gift and etc, but we have barely spoken 50 words to each other in the last 3/4 years. She is a weird woman. Barely speaks. Very awkward. My grandma in law though used to be lovely, so chatty, always texting, always messaging while I was pregnant etc etc etc. and hasn’t messaged in 9 MONTHS at all. But will text my partner saying “could you ask Xxx to send me the video she posted on Facebook?” Why not ask me directly???? Feels like I provided them with the first grandchild and great grandchild and that was it, out of the pic. Yet they also NEVER make the first call or text. Every single time we FaceTime (every couple of weeks, it is my partner calling…

I wouldn’t want to go but I think I would for my partner. My LO hates being in the car too but we usually leave super early in the morning so that she is asleep for the ride. Have you tried that? Or putting a show on? Your partner needs to man up and talk with his mom about sending her money and limit communication with her if she’s feeding him sob stories. He could say this is the last month he’s sending it to her if she doesn’t get a job.
If she can lay down at her big age to make kids, she needs to get a job to support them. If someone was willing to send me $200 a month, I’d keep asking for it too?
If you think she should put an effort in to come see you guys, your partner needs to communicate that to her.
I don’t think you should keep your baby away from his family because you don’t like her, you sacrifice and find a way to make it work. You and the baby will be okay for those 4 days, a 4 hour drive isn’t that long.

Okay, if she will get sick and be inconsolable in a car… it’s not worth it at all.. tell your husband they can go to you or nothing is happening… they accommodate the baby not the other way around

I also agree with Alayna and think even though I understand why you don’t want to go, it’s unfair on your husband and your little girl to keep her away from your family just because you don’t like her/them.

You may go on holiday abroad at some point which is the same amount (or longer) of travelling time, and your daughter may feel the same but I’m sure it would be worth it then because it’s something you would all like to do as a family, and his family will also recognise that if/when it happens!

I think your husband should talk to his mum or his bro’s about the money sitch as he is the only one she asks - I think she should get a job like the rest of us 😂. But for whatever reason she can’t then they all could all chip in with helping her out each month aswell to take the burden off your fam, the responsibility shouldn’t all fall on your partner. However, I would do the same for my mum and I’m sure your little girl would do for you because she loves you xxx

Is this normal?

Is it just my husband that does this? He is able to work from home via his computer and in the mornings and evenings he is on there doing his job. When he is done for the day he tends to stay in the room and either play video games or watch something. He will occasionally come out and play with the girls for a few minutes and that’s it but when I really need him he says he is busy. My daughters are both 1 year old now and I am just wondering how much involvement should he have with them now?
Idk if this is the norm or not…..

Saying NO to buying toys etc

5 year old is getting really envious of others. He is obsessed with items that other kids have at school. I am pestered daily to buy these things in a different style when we already have 3 others. I have seen parents just buying stuff their kid likes which I don't necessarily agree with even when i can afford it. How do you deal with it?

Tablet for kids

Alright don’t need any negative Nancy’s telling me not to get my 2yo a tablet so if that’s what your gunna do please don’t participate in my poll.

We’re about to move cross country 3+ day trip and my 2yo and 9m hate the car I’m talking scream their heads off till they are out of their seats. We’ve already changed car seats and it didn’t help so I’d like to at least have one entertained and sit next to baby and try and distract her or put her to sleep. Our new car has tvs but since they are rear faced my 2yo can’t see it.

Debating getting her a tablet or dvd player right now on long car rides I end up giving her my phone because I get so overwhelmed sitting in between both of them screaming and crying.

And yes I do bring different toys I bring snacks I play songs try to distract her other ways but for the sake of not losing my mind on this move I think this is best.

-A very overwhelmed and anxious to move mama 😓

Daycare?

Thoughts on daycare?? Truly, I am SCARED to be leaving my kid for daycare. I literally do not trust anyone, not even family (they haven’t given me a reason it’s just trust issues on my end, you never know). He’s turning 3 and I’ve been a sahm the whole time but tbh my man doesn’t make enough for us to move out somewhere more calm . We live in a ‘not so safe’ area in LA and I’m just not used to living here so I just want us to give my son a better life and in order to speed up the process I would have to work.. I do lashes at home and I’d be open to take new clients so I wouldn’t have to look for work but I’m just scared to lose my license 😭

5 month old activities

Hey everyone my baby is 5 months old and I want to reduce/cut screen time as I have read up on how bad it is what activities did people do to keep their baby entertained. Thank you in advance.
