I keep seeing so many things about “ toxic boy moms” on social media- tik tok mainly.
I don’t really understand why some things are ok to say/ do with daughters but with sons it makes you “ toxic”
Also a lot about those hating their MIL - I appreciate some mother in laws are very difficult but in some cases it seems the daughter in law is partly to blame / doesn’t make an effort etc

Wow that's a shift. I remember back in 2014+ toxic girl moms🤣 was a topic. I was in parenting, human relations classes etc at the time. I have to agree I see a lot of hate for MIL... & I'm sorry but it takes 2 to tango. I love my MIL. She may be a strong personality & annoying & get under my skin sometimes.. but I am still in love with her son 7 years later. Don't get me wrong there are bad moms. My mom was horrible. But people change too.

I think some MILs can be shitty for sure. Both of my MILs have been amazing, but to make up for my own mother being the worst I've always made sure the people I date have good parents. My own mother however I've gone no contact with 18 years ago and would probably be a huge PITA MIL if I still talked to her. You just hear more about PITA MILs from other women because they're who you chat with, but I know a lot of men hate their MILs too.

There’s a term called emotional incest where mothers rely on their sons for all of their emotional support (basically replacing their husbands.) This can happen with any parent or child but is most commonly mother-son relationships. I had an ex who’s mother was like this because of her alcoholic husband and it meant that she was competitive with his girlfriends like a jealous schoolgirl. Unfortunately it’s not very uncommon and it often begins to manifest with moms of young children as things like “my son could never meet a girl good enough for him” or “it’s my baby, he can just stay with my and never get married.” They rely on the children for all the emotional support of a partner and often tell them about heavy things like finances and other adult responsibilities. Once the kid becomes a teen and starts dating and gets their own life, mom can’t handle it. Unfortunately this is a trend on social media and it’s incredibly toxic and what often causes toxic mother in laws.
