Hi mommas. Baby is 16 mo and still prefers to drink milk with bottle. At night he also likes to drink warm water on a bottle before he goes to sleep. any advice on how I can transition to a sippy cup or straw? or are there any other options out there besides sippy nipple and straw? he’ll drink water from his straw cup during his meals but I usually give him milk after he eats. ive tried giving him milk on a sippy cup during meal time but he would always reject it. at this point his pediatrician has been pushing us to steer away from bottle but i dont know how to transition away from it.

My daughter does the same thing! She’ll drink water out of her straw cup but will barely drink milk out of it. I tried the sippy nipple for her bottle and she wasn’t a fan either. I’m not pushing weaning her off of it too hard right now because she has a 7 week old brother and gets jealous of his bottle a lot, so I’m giving her some grace right now

My pediatrician suggested milk with meals, but my son always throws his cup on the ground because he doesn’t usually drink with his meals. I have been trying to slightly warm milk in a sippy because he won’t drink anything super cold and giving it to him while he’s playing so he can sip on it, and he’s drinking a little of it. But not 100%. But that might be a good start? I also ordered sippy cups with no straw, but the sippy part of it is kind of soft, but not like a bottle nipple. I can try finding the Amazon link, but I’m pretty sure they’re Tommy tippee brand

Yes same! Will only drink water out of a straw or sippy cup. I have a 3 month old as well so my 16 month old finishes her bottles a lot and also still wakes for bottles at night and has one before bed and nap (milk before bed, formula at night feeds). I tried giving warm water for night feedings thinking she would start sleeping through but it’s not helping.
Do we know why they recommend to get off bottles so quickly?

I think it’s for their teeth development. And my pediatrician basically said if the milk with meals and slow wean doesn’t work then to just cut them off cold turkey. But I don’t have it in my heart to do that

I feel like it could be for their teeth, but I’m not 100% sure. I feel like someone told me that one time

I cold turkeyed the bottles at 12 months bc my pediatrician reccomened i do so and stard giving him warm milk in the good 2 grow juice bottles and he took it easy peasy but i cant get him to use a straw cup unless its a normal cup with a straw like we would use

Cold turkey is the best way. You'd be surprised how quick they forget the baby bottle and use other cups

I used Philips Avent natural flow bottles when she was on formula, so when we switched to milk I found a conversion kit on Amazon to change it to a sippy cup, and it worked!

i remembee i used to be so pressured with all the little things when my baby was younger but now that he’s a toddler im more laid back as well when it comes to his eating and sleeping habits. i think it helps us both not to get too frustrated lol

I’m getting much more laid back the older she gets. I still worry a lot, but I try to stay level headed because she catches up and gets to where she needs to be on her own time

thank you!! ill order this and pray that my son will like it 🙏🏼

I am sending you all the good vibes!

i think its for dental hygiene since the little ones already have teeth were not supposed to be giving them milk before they sleep cause that causes cavities. thats why i ended up transitioning to warm water when baby does wake up at night, as long as its warm he’ll take it thankfully. sorry its not helping with you but maybe just keep trying until baby gets used to it. thats the struggle im having now transitioning from nipples to sippies

yeah same cold turkey at this age just seems like it would be harder for both mommy and baby because now baby knows how to throw tantrums even in the middle of the night 🫠

i think a normal straw is ok cause my baby preferred that before than his straw cup and just kind of slowly transitioned to his own straw and sippy
cup eventually

how long did it take for your baby to get used to it? its day 2 of me trying to give my baby milk with the sippy nipple and he hasnt been wanting to drink so ive been caving in back to the nipples. im thinking of doing this for a few more times until hopefully he gets more familiar with the sippy nipple

aww thats awesome! i think my mistake was waiting too long so now i have to struggle trying to transition to something he’s not used to lol

exactly! same here and honestly it keeps me sane which is also what matters haha. they just grow up too fast i cant keep up with all these changes 🥹❤️

@Shanelle you can't cave in. When he gets thirsty enough, putting the new cup to his mouth and letting a little get on his lip will make him want to use it. The caving in is just letting him know he can cry and fuss or whatever and get what he wants. He has the capabilities to use the new cups. My daughter gave in after a few hours the first couple of times. Day 2 she only fought for like 15 minutes. By day 3 there was no fuss and happily took the new sport top sippy bottles.

I also found it better to use pedalite, pedisure, or juice instead of water so it's got flavor and is more enticing.pedicure, at least while she was getting the hang of the sport top bottles and the weighted straw bottles. We are now working on open cup training cups and Moxie was the drink that motivated her to learn it. Now she does okay with other items in the cup but still figuring it out, we are on day 3 so far with this cup.
