Hi, I had a scan a few days ago which showed twins. Which is great news however one is measuring significantly smaller than the other. Has anyone else had this early on? If so what was the outcome? Any interventions? Thank you in advance.

Mono-di?

@Kadesha No, they are from 2 different eggs. An IVF pregnancy with 2 embryos. They have a separate sac.

Hey Margot, I’m currently 27 weeks with di/di twins and twin B has been significantly smaller since the beginning. It was recommended I do the amniocentesis test on the account of B being so little. They said they were concerned and that were high risk because of it. We were almost not going to go ahead (due to being worried about miscarriage risk) but decided in the end we’d rather know if there was anything serious going on. We did the test and thankfully everything came back clear! Following the amnio on the 29th September we’ve since been doing weekly scans - one week to check my blood flow/ placenta, the following for growth. They’ll most likely need to do this til I’m due in the new year to stay on top of everything and make sure everything continues to track ok.
Hope this was helpful x

Yes, this is so helpful congratulations! Wishing you a smooth few months and delivery. Do you happen to know how much of a size discrepancy it was on your first scan? Also, has the size difference decreased since you first found out about it?

we didn’t know officially in the early weeks as they didn’t do measuring at that stage. But around 16 weeks B was 28% smaller according to doctors that was suddenly ’high risk’ and ‘not normal’ which was hard news to take!
Twin A has always been in the healthy size range, although B in the past few scans has crept up into 1% range whereas previously was always in the minus! So long as B continues growing on it’s own trajectory fortnightly and blood flow remains steady we’ll be ok!

Thank you for replying. I’ll wait and pray. Our second baby is half the size of the other one. For now thankful they both have adequate heartbeats.

apparently it is very common for twins but doctors won’t ever tell you that because they can’t give you any definitive answers until they analyse the data!
I just found out yesterday that they’re confident I have a placenta issue rather than a baby issue. Because of this they’re now aiming for delivering at the 32-34 week mark - then ncu until 37 weeks.
Sending you nothing but positivity and light. Good luck with your little ones!

Thank you so much for the insight. Wishing you happy healthy babies. Sorry for the news you received. I have a friend who recently delivered twins at 31 weeks. Her babies stayed in the NICU and it was hard but they are now home with her happy and healthy.
