My lil guy loves to throw and push food off the table/off his tray. If it was fruit or something I used to rinse it off and hand it back to him, but have stopped doing it recently to show him once he throws it, it’s gone. However - sometimes he leans over his high chair whining and crying persistently to get it back (even when I try to distract him from it) and I also cringe having to throw away the floor food. Has any body figured out a good way to reason with their baby or prevent them from being so interested in flinging their food around?!

There is something called a Catchy that you can buy that attaches under the high chair that will catch the food and you can give it to your LO again. Besides that, do you think your LO is done eating and just whining because they are done? Food throwing is often a sign that babies are done eating. You can also try not responding when they throw food and see if maybe they are doing it for a reaction

I just take the whole plate away and say “that tells momma you’re all done” then sign all done.
If he cries I ask “do you want more?” Then sign more and hand him a bite
If he eats it instead of throwing I give the plate back.
The first few days I did this it was a lot of back and forth but recently it’s gotten much better and the food throwing has stopped quite a bit. Annoying but stuck with it!

this is actually really helpful to me. Thanks for sharing!!
that Catchy sounds GREAT! At least for the interim - and I’m guessing is easier to clean than the floor too which is a plus 😅
He will sometimes continue to eat, but I think what you’re saying could definitely be a factor - it’s usually after he’s at least had the majority of his meal that he starts throwin things around, but sometimes I do think he’s just playing 🤷🏻♀️
THANK YOU! I will give this a try! 🤍

Seconding that the Catchy is amazing!!!! It helps a lot with dropping but not throwing imo… but there’s always a lot of dropping.
I was also going to add that we took away the tray an pushed his high chair up to the table per advice of an SLP. Apparently it’s a psychology thing - more surface area makes them think they have less food than they do or something?
Anyway. Good luck!

We have a tarp we put down for every meal time. Can't be floor food if it's on the tarp!😂🤞🏾
