I just want to ask if allowed to claim child benefit (as I would just stop working until my baby would start school as all my salary would just go to childcare, )if my husband earns 50k annually? I tried ringing HMRC many times last week but couldn't get through the line. Thank you for all responses.

If he earns bang in 50k you should still be entitled to something. It's when you start earning over 50k that it reflects how much you get called the High income child benefit charge. So if one of you earned 52,000 you might get about 75 a month instead of 96. The higher you earn the less you would get
Ahh okay.thank you so much.

Yes I believe so, make sure you apply rather than husband though so you get the NI credits while you’re not working x

As Leigh said. I've claimed, despite husband earning. Although it's not adjusted, I think at the end of the tax year they can claim back a % which works out less than not claiming at all.

You get very little. Around 96 per
Month but from that amount you need to pay tax at end of financial year so it’s works out something like £25 per month.
Thank you mummies.
What if I would not claim child benefit? What will happen to my pension without NI credits for say 3 or 4 years?

You have to have 30 years full NI contributions to qualify for the full state pension. So it’s really worthwhile applying for it to cover you for the years you’re out of work, especially as you may have previous years where you haven’t made full contributions etc. You can chose to pay to top up any non qualifying years but that’s silly when you could just claim for the child and cover yourself x

You can check how many qualifying years you currently have here if you want to see if you’ve missed out on any previously.

Thank you Jenn I don't want headaches for my husband next tax year. But I'm thinking of it as well
Hi I would like to ask if husband is earning 60k per annum and I am staying at home and stop working to look after our son would I get benefit or not? Money monthly is just a bonus, I am more concerned of my NI credits for the coming years that I won't be at work. Thank you.
