My husband is former military, and a pilot, and I can probably answer some of your questions. What branch of the military did he join?

What is he assigned to? Infantry? Maintenance? Medical? He has to have picked a career field if he is enlisted. Or is he going to OTS? Is he college ROTC?

Hello and thanks for responding, he was Navy and yes he has VA benefits. He doesn’t want to use the GI because they only pay for schooling for 4 years. He was talking to a recruiter from California flight academy and he was explaining to him that the GI doesn’t pay for your private license and he have to take out a student loan to pay for it first . Going through an academy rather then an University will get you in the career faster .

(I assume the goal is to become a professional pilot? If so, then…
There are two kinds of flight schools on the civilian side: Part 141 and Part 61. A Part 141 school consists of formalized training with established coursework, schedule, syllabus, etc. A Part 61 school is less formal and more of one-on-one learning with an individualized instructor. The GI Bill will pay for the Part 141 formalized training for his advanced certifications, after getting his private pilot license.
He might want to think about getting his private pilots license through a Part 61 school, since it has to come out of pocket anyway…find a dedicated instructor and get through the 50-70 hrs as quickly as possible; then enroll in a Part 141 school for his advanced certifications (paid for by the GI bill).

My husband is happy to talk with him if he would like. My husband was an Air Force pilot and currently is an airline pilot. He says a lot of this is really complex and he could explain it much better in a phone call.

He’s not familiar with the Part 141 schools in CA, but one resource is flightsabove.org and the FB page flights above the pacific southwest (FATPSW)…the community is a great resource for asking about flight school recommendations. Also, some of the airlines are also sponsoring flight training from beginning to end (Alaska Airlines and Delta both have programs), and they take someone from their private pilots license through the hours they need to start flying with an airline.

My husband knows people that he can put you in touch with who have gone different routes to become pilots, including one who is currently in the Delta program

thank you so much is it okay to exchange contact numbers ?

Absolutely. I am going to send you a private message.

Thank you
