Face and head rubbing/hitting at night!

Hi all

Sleep deprived mum here needing some advice!!

My little boy is 15 weeks old. He WAS sleeping really well, 9pm - 8am (with a 20 min feed at 3am)

But the past week, he has been constantly waking, thrashing around, hitting and rubbing his head and face, to the point where he had nasty cuts on his head on the first night (manage to wiggle his little fingers our of the mits, got that sorted now though) everytime he hits and rubs his head, he knocks his dummy out then starts crying, for that dummy! So I have to keep going back and forth giving it to him.
Only way I can get any sleep is by holding his arms to his chest and falling asleep like that, as it stops him rubbing his face and head.

He has cradle cap, and a few days before this all started we used baby oil, and combed a bit of it out, then used some gentle baby moisturiser on his head. So I was under the impression the hitting/rubbing was through his head irritating him. But that's all eased now. The cradle cap is back as it was before (and it never irritated him previously!)
He is also teething, constantly dribbling and biting everything he can.

In the day he has 4 naps, and sleeps absolutely fine. So I'm not sure what the thrashing/rubbing at night is all about! He is SO loud whilst he's doing it. I'm running on about 3 hours a night (broken into about 8 small segments!) And have another little one at home so cannot nap in the day.

Not sure if it's sleep regression, teething, irritated skin or something else!

Are any of your little ones doing this head rubbing? Or any tips on what it could be and how to help it?

Mine doesn't have cradle cap but does the exact same. Wakes himself up by hitting himself in the face.

If I'm quick enough I can roll him onto his side and oat his bum until he settles. Sometimes I gentle rest Mt hand over his arms. It doesn't always work and he wakes then have to cuddle back to sleep again.

No Idea why but I feel you. Ita gone from two wake ups a night to over double due to this.

I could have written this myself my little girl is exactly the same at the moment and I was wondering the exact same! Hoping it’s just part of the sleep regression and it will pass

@Hayley hi Hayley. Its so frustrating isn't it, especially like you say, when the wake ups have doubled and you're used to the extra bit of sleep! Whan did your little one start doing this?

Avatar

@Alice Gosden I'm hoping it will pass sooner rather than later. I'm like a zombie! Makes me feel so guilty on my other little one!
When did your daughter start doing this?

My little one is 14 weeks and the passed 3 nights she has started doing the exact same!! I was thinking it is part of the sleep regression! Going for sleeping 7pm - 7am to now up at 1am and 3am😴😴😴

@Crystal last night weren't as bad as the past 6 nights, my boy was still having a 3am night feed (took around 20 mins) but he's now added the 1am and 5am. With all the wriggles and face hitting in-between!
Hard to get used to it again isn't it!

My little one 15 weeks on Saturday and has been doing this for 3/4 weeks now 😴 it’s so exhausting! I was also like you wondering if she’d had a reaction to something I’d put on her head because of her rubbing of the eyes but she does it all the time even when nothings been used. I think she’s found her hands, and now found her face and eyes 🤦🏼‍♀️ she has also now started to wake up for a feed in the night rather than sleeping through… 😁 I’m SO tired. I dread the nights and the disruption .

Hey! I thought my little one had cradle cap, as he was doing the same as your wee one and was constantly trying to get to it at night. Turns out it’s eczema and not cradle cap - once we got a cream from the Dr to treat it, he’s stopped scratching and bothering his head and his sleep is much better! Dr said cradle cap shouldn’t bother them at all because it’s not itchy. Some babies also hit their heads to self soothe, hopefully you get some sleep soon! X

My 16 week old does this but rubs his face on the bed or if being held he runs on my boobs? It’s constant and wakes himself up a lot in the night. Maybe it’s a phase? But he’s only started doing in in the last few weeks! If anyone has answers I would love to know 🤣 x

My son is 15 weeks and on this too. I need answers because it's frustrating. You don't get to sleep when they are awake

@Laura-May my boy was 12 weeks Tuesday, it just started a few days ago.

Im sure i read somewhere it may be a self soothing method same with leg slamming although not sure how it's soothing.

We still have 1 and 5am ish feeds but was then up in between all those.

she only started a couple of days ago but I think it’s because I’ve unswaddle her for sleep now and she’s showing sign of rolling hopefully it’s just getting use to having her arms free

Vanilla extract

Has anyone used alcohol free vanilla in their babies formal to help them drink?
I’m 100% sure my baby refuses her bottles as she doesn’t like the taste of it!

Just anxious to try it, don’t want her to get used to it and then refuse bottles again after two weeks of using (correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read you use it for 2 weeks max)

TIA 🙂

Car seat crying

My 6 month old PANICS the second I put him in a car seat and screams, cries, chokes and recently even projectile vomited on a 14 minute drive. It’s gotten to the point I don’t even bring him out unless it’s to a doctors appointment. I’m a stay at home mom with no family in my state and it has been very isolating. We’ve tried 3 different car seats with no improvement. Has anyone had a baby who hated the car seat? Any advice? This started at 3 months. I will add it does seem worse when he’s tired. He does cry on every trip though. He only contact naps and co sleeps so he reaches for me and will not sleep in the car seat.

Sex post C section

Hi ladies I’m 4 weeks 5 days postpartum and I had a C section. I’m not bleeding properly anymore just some brownish discharge stuff that starts on and off. I’d like to do the deed with my partner; is it okay to do so or shall I wait the full 6 weeks. I feel up for it but also worried because the advice is 6-8 weeks.

Postpartum

I’m only 3 days postpartum (FTM) and already have extremely bad anxiety. I’m crying every night, as I think of another night of no sleep. My baby will not settle in his cot, he cries every moment we put him down unless in his chair rocker. So me and my partner are having to alternate after 3/4 hours of being awake with him downstairs. I’m trying everything to get him to settle. It’s a load of overwhelming stress. I’m 23, I was desperate for a baby and now I have one and feel completely useless. I miss it just being me and my partner.
