I keep being told by my MIL to put baby to sleep on their tummy even though the advice is against this. When she’s over at our house she will put baby on their tummy to prove she sleeps really well like this (she does, she will sleep a lot longer) I’ve told her I still don’t feel comfortable doing it and won’t be doing it, even if it means really short naps on her back but she says I need to do what’s best for my baby which is ‘obviously tummy sleeping’..
I now don’t feel confident with her babysitting to be honest as I feel she would just put her on her tummy so that she does longer naps.
What are your thoughts on this? What would you do in this situation? Would you put baby on their tummy?

You do you hun. MIL can be a nightmare and seem to think they are the mum. Don’t do anything you feel uncomfortable. With regards to her babysitting. You should sit her down with your hushed and ask her to respect your wishes. Depends on how much you trust her. Would she still do it if you and your husband specifically asked her not to?

do whatever makes you comfortable… i let my little boy sleep on his tummy BUT only when supervised as he will only sleep that way except for being on me. my health visitor said that if it helps both me and him then it’s okay just as long as he’s supervised the whole time. if you don’t feel comfortable with doing that then don’t do it and don’t let anyone force or bully you into it. do whatever makes you feel comfortable

I had this with my mum you have to remember that years ago they never used to stop you letting babies sleep on their tummy and abroad is the same. Personally my baby hated sleeping on his back and wouldn't so I trialled tummy sleeping in the day when I could watch him and at 2 weeks I was surprised to see that my boy could turn his head by himself with no struggle so I decided that I was confident enough to let him tummy sleep at night too or on his side and he has done ever since. It's the only way I get Any sleep. Do what is right for you and its your decision no one else's so as everyone else said don't be forced into it.

When I was a baby the advice was always to put babies on their stomachs to sleep- research has now shown that this increases the risk of cot death. I’d show your MIL the lullaby trust website and show her the research - hopefully she’ll understand why you are insisting on back sleeping!

The advice has changed so much since we were little. Like others have said I'd show her the Lullaby Trust website so she can understand why we follow ABC nowadays for safe sleep. At the end of your day if you are not comfortable with her babysitting don't do it x

I have to explain to people all the time that research has now been done and it’s better to go with as much of the advice as possible. It doesn’t stop them though 🙄🙄
