I want to start pumping so I have some breastmilk in the freezer for when I am away from bubs. My question is when is it best to pump? I thought I should feed bubs and then pump but I don’t really get much from that as my supply has now regulated. And is it best to do it in the morning or night? For reference bubs is 16 weeks old, she goes about 2.5-3.5 in between feeds and we exclusively breastfeed. Thanks!

My bub goes to bed at 6:30pm and I would go to bed about 9:30pm, so I got into the habit of pumping 9:15 before I went to bed! Your body gets used to it and will supply more at that time as it knows your boobs are being stimulated. I found this worked very well for me!

There’s a few options.
1. Choose one feed and pump after it. You may not be getting a lot now but if you keep doing this your body will learn that extra milk is needed then and your supply at that time will increase.
2. Choose a convenient time that doesn’t impact feeds (like Jessie’s example). It doesn’t matter if it is morning or night just a time that works for you. You’ll get more milk initially.
(For both of the above the key is always choosing the same time so your milk supply adapts to the demand and as you’ve built supply at that time you may find you can’t really skip pumping).
3. Pump when bub takes less milk. Sometimes bub will only take 1 boob or just drink less or sleep longer than expected. Anytime your boob is too full just pump some out. If it is at random times then it won’t really change supply.
Don’t go overboard as frozen breastmilk only keeps for 3 months (in the freezer section of a combined fridge/freezer) or 6 months in standalone freezer.

You could do a feed say 2 feeds on the left, let right really fill up and pump right and then do a feed off it as well to make sure it’s empty
Or if you only feed on one side at a time then just pump the other side once you are done feeding…. Or a haaka
I only pump before a feed as my newborn can’t handle my let down yet but I’ve been recommended a haaka with both babies and yet to get one 🙃😅
