I have been suffering with engorgment and blocked breast milk ducts for the last 48 hours. My whole left breast is really painful and sore. I also feel rundown and really tired. The Dr's have given me a backup script of antibiotics.
I am so worried though, my husband has taken over care duties, but he goes back to work on Monday 😞 and I'm not sure I can keep up with looking after my month old when I feel this rundown and sick. :( 😞
Covered my nipple up with cabbage leaves I am using for a little bit of dignity.
I want to go onto formula feeding now , but so far the lactation specialist have told me to pump (as I'm too sore to put baby on the nipple) until I have healed from the blocked ducts and mastitus.
If its gone red a swollen, should I go on the antibiotics? On a side note, I hate antibiotics and anti-inflammitories because of chronic gut issues I have :(

I had mastitis last summer, so painful. I ended up in hospital for a few days with my baby as I had a urine infection as well and a fever. It does look and sound like mastitis to me. If you’re breastfeeding, you do need to carry on pumping or breastfeeding as normal while you have mastitis, you need to clear the milk out from the blocked ducts. Paracetamol and a warm bath or shower should help ease the pain and make pumping a little bit easier. But definitely speak to your doctor and start antibiotics
@Scarlett how long did it take to clear up for you? Xx

After starting IV antibiotics, all my symptoms completely cleared after around 4 days. I was given oral anibiotics to finish at home for another 7 days I think

You can also take ibuprofen for the anti-inflammatory. Safe to take while breastfeeding
@Reena, thanks . I'm starting antibiotics today as I feel rundown and abit fluey, I also got some Lecithin supplements and been putting cold on it. I've even putting anti inflammation gel on my breast even though it's not great for me other condition.
I'm pumping when baby has a bottle as my breasts are too sore to my LO on at the moment. I just hope it passes soon 😞

Completely agree with Reena. Ice. Ibuprofen. Gentle lymphatic massage. And take the antibiotics if you need them
I've had it a lot and honestly when I've needed to take the antibiotics I've felt better within 24 hours once I take them
@Reena I'm over the fever symtoms with antibiotics but still struggling to unblock the ducts but starting to see some improvement, but it's lowered my milk supply so I'll probably be moving onto combo feeding then formila. I've had to start introducing formula already as I ran out of enough expressed milk

Keep icing your boob. There isn't anything to unblock as such, it's inflammation. It can lower your supply but it's usually temporary
