Requesting Elective Section due to my medical conditions UK

I'm 34 weeks +1 , each consultant appointment I have requested a C-section (still no booking) due to having Multiple Slcerosis and Proctitis , i have explained my reasoning to them for this , done all my research not sure I can do anymore 🤣 but I feel like they are making me feel im doing the wrong thing , have referred me to birth choices , cause they feel I'm okay to give birth naturally , I've had a good cry today cause it's really not me getting out of natural labour , I just feel due to my symptoms I suffer with already on a daily basis I feel the c section would be best , do I just stick to my guns and keep going for the section cause that it was i would like !

Like why do they not take into consideration your thoughts 😞!

It is 100% your choice whether you choose to have a c section or vaginal birth. Yes c sections are longer recovery and you are opting for major surgery - but if you are well researched and acknowledge this then it is completely your choice. Also something my midwife told me was that anyone can request a C-section, you don’t actually need a medical need so even if you went in there asking for one with no specific reason they should honour that x

I requested it because of arthritis and a previous traumatic vaginal birth and they said as long as I'd fully researched it 🙃

I actually found the recovery easier but everybody is different 😊

Avatar

I totally get that ☺️ , and I fully understand a c section is longer recovery but the potential of what could happen given birth naturally for me I could possibly end up having emergency c section anyway, and for all the reasons I have given to them already this is why I also feel a c section would just be best.

Oh really never knew that if I'm honest , guess they have to take your reasons into consideration whatever the situation.

Each time it's been written on my notes so we shall see what happens at my next appt ! , just frustrating when it doesn't feel like they are listening to you...! Thanks for your comment lovely xx

I felt like that with my 2nd pregnancy. It wasn't until 36 weeks that they actually booked my section date! They kept trying to push me down the natural route. Which I 100% was not going to do following a 3A tear with first baby.

This pregnany, since 14 weeks consultant has agreed to a c section. And I should get my date at my next appointment.

It's 100% your choice and if you want to go the section route don't let them push you in another direction.

Need to come to your hospital haha , mine seems useless , think I'm going to try and be more firm next time at my appt , just to make sure they know I do fully understand about it , and this Is what I want !

Yeah that's the thing isn't it , I'm glad recovery went well for you x

Avatar

@Nikita yes agreed, I got my date at my 36th week appointment.

I actually went into labour the day before my scheduled csection. And they were absolutely fine with it. Just asked me 1 more time if I was sure and I had the opp 2 hours later after observations 🙃

Yeah im thinking maybe at my 36 weeks appt where I'll have a growth scan etc again , and get to speak with the consultant I'm going to be firm next time and make sure they are aware of what it is I want ! Bad that they try and change your mind or push you like you say ! They should just respect choice. Unless because it's my first etc , is why they are being like this , but I'll see at my next appt and hopefully they can give me a date ! x

Avatar

Exactly that , but they just sometimes make you feel like you're doing wrong.
Definitely going to stick to my guns , hopefully on my appt at 36 weeks I can get them to book something x

Avatar

Just stay strong 🙃 if they try and refuse you, you are entitled to ask for a new consultant/be referred to one who will agree

Avatar

I get what you mean, they do make you feel as if you’re doing something wrong by requesting one. It is your body and completely your choice. When I requested mine I had a male consultant tell me that I should give birth naturally and just have an epidural and would be fine and pain-free 🤪 . I think it’s their not being listened to That’s the most frustrating thing I found!

Avatar

It was the best decision I ever made. I had really pad ppd/ppa with my first because of the traumatic experience, but I was absolutely fine this time. I've really enjoyed my maternity this time round 😊

Just take the recovery easy and don't push too much.

You don’t have to have any medical conditions you can just elect to have a c section if you want one so stick to your guns! I had one because they wanted to induce me and I said I would prefer a section. I wonder if referring you to birth choices may just be a tick box exercise they have to do before they can agree to it?

Avatar

Stop asking and tell them.

Literally instead of "I was wondering if a csection..." say "I am having a csection I need you to arrange it"

If youre in the UK you have the right to choose for any or no reason you can choose a csection xx

See I didn't know this , being my first it's all new to me , that's what I was thinking , yeah think I need to tell them more firmly , they have put it all in my notes , that I have said I want one so we shall see. X

Avatar

I see them again on the 3rd April so will tell them then it's definitely what I want ! They have put it all in my notes that I have said I want one , hoping to get more from my 36th week check.

Yeah few people have said this , this is my first so all new to me , and I never knew this !

Thank you x

I’ll be honest id tell them theres no need for birth choices I’ve already made the decision thats best for me and baby and tell birth choices the same that you have looked into it and carefully considered it and decided a c section is the best and safest route for both of you physically and mentally. Advocate for whats best for you, a lot of the time all theyre considering is whats best for baby and their own schedules when our feelings are just as important and none of us would put our own feelings above babies safety so what we think should be listened to and acknowledged

Avatar

In the U.K. we have a right to make choices on how we give birth. My friend who is a medical malpractice lawyer said if I felt I wasn’t being listened to, to mention Montgomery’s law which is about informed consent. I didn’t have to use this but I felt more confident when speaking to doctors knowing there is legislation that supports you when making choices around your birth. Good luck!

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

C section or natural?

I am a control freak and thinking c section is the least stressful route for me and baby… less complications during labour etc. whilst acknowledging recovering can be hard.
If it could be guaranteed no tearing or complications then I would opt for natural and kind of want to experience the feeling.
Then again could plan and go either way 😂 arghh!
Anyone else in this predicament?

Homebirth?

I am thinking I want a homebirth (second baby) for a few different reasons but my husband is very against it, he is worried about things going wrong and we are a 30 minute drive from the hospital. Has anyone been in a similar position and what did you end up doing? Any advice? 🙏
