My 17 month old is on a medicine strike and I feel like I’ve tried every tactic and was wondering if anyone had any ideas that I haven’t tried?
These are the things I’ve tried so far:
- syringe in mouth (absolute meltdown)
- on a spoon (worked once and never again)
- in her yoghurt (worked well for ages but now hates all yoghurts 🙃)
- strawberry ‘milkshake’ (one sip and a big fat “naa”)
- in a cup (rookie move)
- in a bottle (now refuses all bottles)
- in a purée pouch (worked once)
- having it in the bath (I thought a change in location would help 😅)
She’s so blocked up, coldy AND teething and I just want the poor girl to have a bit of medicine 😩 any genius ideas would be greatly appreciated by this desperate mumma!

I find it makes a big difference if a second person can hold baby whilst I give it in small amounts from the syringe.
If I try to hold baby and give it from the syringe at the same time, it’s a total non-starter - with crying, and mouth held firmly shut when I try with the syringe.
But with a 2 person approach, it suddenly seems to improve things.
Feel for you, and hope things improve.

thank you! I forgot to include the ‘double team’ in my list 🤪 unfortunately it’s the same outcome whomever is holding her, just us covered in calpol and a screaming kiddo 🤦♀️

These two suggestions came up online…
“put the dose into an egg cup & keep dipping your finger/dummy into it & giving it to her to suck”.
But I guess she may just not like the flavour.
There’s also apparently a way of blowing on their face to make them swallow. Not something that sounds like a first or pleasant option - not sure how I’d feel about trying that - but maybe look that up further and see if it sounds like something worth consideration.
And mention of squirting the calpol into the cheek, rather than trying to get it straight into the mouth.
Also wondered if trying distraction with music/tv may calm her down a bit, enough to take a bit of time out, before trying again.
Wish you luck.

I tried distraction (TV), use different flavour, dummies

We use a syringe to get it in her mouth and then blowing gently on her face makes her swallow it xx

Also the colourfree version of calpol works better with mine xx

My son only takes it if I pretend to take it too, I got some blackcurrant juice in the syringe and took it then he wanted it so I gave him calpol in his. The “mummy has it so I want it” trick always works wonders in my household

Mine absolutely loves Calpol and guzzles it off the spoon 🫣 is this weird?

Does she use a dummy? If so the MAM ‘Air’ Dummies have holes big enough for a calpol syringe to go through WHILST sucking the dummy 😬 I know you’ve tried the syringe but it’s the only way my boy will tolerate it (and we’ve just stopped the dummy this week so god help us too!) xx

If you have sugar free or sugar and dye free then maybe try the bright pink sugary one. My little girl hated calpol so we tried what we call the fun packed one which she now sucks out of the syringe herself. Unfortunately apart from that I have no tips. We tried every position, every decoy and nothing else worked

My little girl absolutely will not have any medicine unless we let her hold the medicine bottle herself? So weird but it works. So we let her hold the calpol bottle and she’ll then take it off a syringe, so bizarre 😂

I put it on her dummy and it works amazingly! Obviously I have to keep taking it in and out, she doesn’t get as overwhelmed, or when she cries I just aim to the back of her mouth

I just give her the syringe in her hand, she examines it for a while and then usually ends up sucking it herself, if you act fast you can squirt it in her mouth when she has the right end in her mouth. Maybe some minor leakage

this worked! Fingers crossed it keeps working 😅

the dummy one worked! Thanks!

Thank you all 💛 I tried the dummy method and it’s novelty made her laugh and then she decided it was good enough to drink from a bowl 😅 fingers crossed it wasn’t just a one hit wonder!

excellent - very pleased to hear it. Hope she’s better!
