So my friends daughter has asd she is potty trained but really struggles with going poop. She holds it in till it becomes explosive diarrhea and she pukes. They can’t do stool softeners cause somehow she knows it’s in a drink or yogurt or everything they have tried. She’s too young for pills and no longer takes most medicines. Does anyone have any tips to help her learn to go poo before it becomes a huge issue?

Blowing Bubbles whilst sitting on the potty relaxed muscles and might help her go.

I don’t have any tips but my son who’s 4 is the same - we can’t give him the prescribed laxatives he has because that’s not the problem he just won’t go and holds it in so much! We have offered him to put his legs up on a stool to help but he doesn’t like any of that, he’s just scared of going I think. We still have a potty because of this reason as well, we bring it in the lounge but he just won’t go! Often he will go in his pants when distracted in play or his nappy for overnight!

Hiya, I myself am autistic and going to the toilet is a sensory nightmare, when I was younger I would literally hold it in until I couldn’t anymore, and honestly I only stoped doing this until I got pregnant and physically couldn’t anymore! 😂 The best ways I’ve found to combat it are distraction while going, and/or a treat afterwards so that I have some form of motivation for getting through it, you didn’t say how old she is so I can’t think of any suggestions for her age, but that’s my personal experience :)
