My kids are being assessed for autism. And the doctors keep trying to talk to her to see if she will talk to them. She doesn’t she will smile and look at them but doesn’t say anything. So I’m wondering would typical kids actually respond to them or is that an unrealistic expectation considering she doesn’t know them. Will your kids talk to doctors or any other strangers? I’m wondering how much of a sign this is.

My kids speaks to them or shows them something on there top, arm my 4 yesr old asks everyone what their name is
My 2 year old is shy at first but will babble after 10 mins usually
do they start the conversations? Or do they wait until they are asked something?
My daughter is happy to see them and holds things up if she’s asked about it. But it’s mostly staring and smiling.

No if I take my son to the doctor he gets shy and cuddles up to me he wouldn’t answer questions. He’ll happily chat to people when we’re out and about though.

What age is your child? I think it’s normal and developmentally appropriate for children to have some level of stranger danger/anxiety however younger kids might overcome this quite quickly and mimic their parents response to the stranger.
When it comes to autism, some children on the spectrum might strike up conversations very easily with strangers and show no anxiety and don’t have that “filter” so to speak, on how to appropriately engage with a stranger so might over engage or seem quite intense. maybe that’s what the doctor is meaning? I have worked with children from the age of 6 who have been getting assessed for autism and that was a trait I seen a lot. Others however, will not speak to strangers at all x

My son (11) when he was 4 burnt his fingers in school.. of course the walk in didn’t believe me for one second he could possibly have done it in school and kept asking him how it happened.. he kept looking at me to answer and they where like we need to hear it from him! I was MORTIFIED!!!
So no my son when younger wouldn’t speak to ‘strangers’ (he is now awaiting an ADHD assessment!)
My daughter is 3 and she won’t speak to strangers! She warms to our GP after about 10 mins just as the appointment is finished 🙄🤣
I wouldn’t say this is like a red flag neurodivergent thing personally

It's not usual for children not to talk to strangers. It's developmentally 'normal' regardless of age.

My 11 Yr old (not on the spectrum) will only talk to people if she feels like it/needs to,
She hates people asking her questions especially when they don't need to know the answer but she's been raised knowing she doesn't have to, but will if the need arises if that makes sense
