My daughter is 19 months old. She has started throwing food if she doesn’t like it. I have tried talking to her to explain to leave it on the tray and not throw. She does it more if I tell her not to. Today I took away the food and let her sit in the chair. She cried a lot. She wanted to get out of the chair. After a while I picked her up and soothed her. My husband didn’t like it. Even I didn’t like it. But I have heard from other moms to start telling her that actions have consequences. If you throw food you’ll have to sit in the chair until stop crying. I’m feeling bad for doing that. How did you guys manage?

My child started throwing food when she didn't want it from a young age but when she started I just started encouraging her to pack it into a container (typically it is fruit and I will pack it up and give it to her as a snack later) so now if she starts throwing I ask if she wants to pack it up and she will tell me yes and wait for me to bring a container lol. She is 18 months and has been doing this for a long time now.
So for me it's more about teaching acceptable alternatives rather than teaching consequences because she potentially won't link that yet.

Throwing food is totally normal at this age. You can offer her a bowl and show her how to put food she doesn’t want into the bowl. They typically throw food because throwing is fun, they’re not hungry enough at a meal time, or they’re just playing!
It’s totally fine to remove the food if she’s just throwing it and not eating it. In general with my son I always tell him something twice, and then the third time hold the boundary.
I would not leave her in her chair crying, however. What do you think that’s teaching her? The consequence for throwing the food is not being able to throw the food anymore. I would absolutely take her out of the chair and comfort her if she’s upset.

She’s too little for those punishments, she doesn’t understand yet. It’s normal for them to throw food. Try offering less at a time. That’s the only thing that helped us.

Thank you so much. I made a mistake. I’m learning. 😊

We all are! 🫶🏼

You knew it didn't feel right, you just didn't know what the solution was yet, don't stress!

Yeah there are so many things to learn and it feels like I’m so behind.

Oh my gosh, don't even stress! We're all learning as we go lol
