Welcome to SA, feel free to message me if you like. I live in the southern suburbs 😊

Mine is on $1000 a week. We do pretty well, and I'm getting FTB parenting payment partnered while I'm not working. I'm due with our baby girl Dec/Jan.

My partner makes over 160k a year and with our mortgage it is still a struggle being a SAHM but we managed

Hi. I moved from the UK to Adelaide last year for my husband's work. We have a 4 year old and I've just found out I'm expecting. I've had a few casual jobs but mainly been a SAHM. Happy to chat figures privately if you want to drop me a message.

Australia is so expensive, and depends on your kids age really, what got us shocked was daycare prices, we still wanted them to socialise and find friends for 2 days a week. Adelaide prices are going up as well. If you have Medicare gets easier but hidden expenses can shock you. If you want to buy, mortgage rates are crazy high. We callculated he would need to earn 200k for renting, 300k for buying.
wow! Okay that is not what I was expecting haha

It really depends on a lot of factors - what your lifestyle is like, where you live etc… Facebook marketplace is amazing for second hand furniture & there are tonnes of free / cheap playgroups (not sure how old your lo’s are) library is a great place to start. Adelaide is beautiful!
thank you, that's very helpful

Depending on where you live, kids age, if you qualify for Medicare and your lifestyle, I’d say you’d need a job with a minimum of $160k plus super to rent. Best to aim for $200k plus super.

300k

These are a bit dramatic, you could get by on 100k if you don't use any daycare. Dunno why everyones going on about daycare when you said you wanted to be a sahm.

I'm curious how many states do the free childcare scheme.

@Ella because kids need to socialise, if you don't have friends and family here, that is the way, also a way of not be overwhelmed with kids and new country. Kids cost a lot, 100 K is just for not to starve.

well it depends on housing costs tbh
$470 a week is over $24k a year
$640 in rent is over $33k a year
$800 a week is over $41k a year
If you're spending $300 a week in groceries that's another $15.6k
We've lived on $100-120k for the past few years and we are doing fine, it's definitely not hand to mouth. And we DO have daycare costs.

it's a national scheme so all of them. It's not free though, its subsidised.

@Ella ohh I call it free because I don't pay anything for it, that's all. My child has to go 2 days a week no more no less and yeah. That's all I knew about it and I'm not complaining because it was costing me hundreds a week to send him before.
kids can socialise at playgroups (assuming you have that there!)
do you get the scheme even if one of the parents isn't working?

I'm actually not entirely sure about that part. The centre director knows I'm not working because I'm 30 weeks pregnant, and it's hard to do anything these days without pain. It wouldn't hurt to ask about it if you wanted to see if they could do the scheme for you/your child.
is it the daycare that decides or centrelink? Thanks so much!

Pretty sure it's called the Start Strong Program. I'm in NSW so I'm not sure if it's called the same in other states.
