My 2 year old used to be so good with her sleep. Put her in the cot at bed time
In her room and if she didn’t fall asleep straight away she would sing to herself until she did.
This last week has been a completely different story. She has been fighting going to sleep. We have pushed back her bad time routine to see if that is the issue. It didn’t work, last night she ended up sleeping in our bed because we gave up. I have spoken to a social worker and she said that would happen with a new sibling around the corner. We are debating whether to bring her cot in our room so she isn’t sleeping in bed with us and making us have terrible sleep. (with her sister arriving I know we will be sleep deprived anyway.) However part of me doesn’t want to do this because it is causing more change in her life and I don’t want her to get used to our room and then be difficult to transfer back to her room. I ah w a signed in her room. I’m tempted to just lie down on the sofa bed and then sneak into my room when she has put herself to sleep so she isn’t getting used to sharing a room with us.
Any advice if you have experienced this would be amazing!

My daughter turned two in September and I think we are just coming out of the regression now, still waking up a couple of times at night but she either self settles or just wants her riff raff. At one point she was waking up every 30-40 minutes and it was exhausting I didn’t bring her into my bed and stood firm in her staying in her floor bed, I would however curl up next to her if she still wouldn’t settle. Some nights it would take 2 hours for her to go back to sleep.
She’s now telling me when it’s bed time and falling asleep within 5 minutes of having a cup of milk.
It does get better ❤️

There could be two things at play.
1. This is age related (not new sibling related), where toddlers start to increasingly test parents' limits, have a million things to do before bedtime, and where the daily nap can start to push out bedtime. We had bedtime resistance like this with each child.
2. It could be related to new sibling. When our 2nd child was born, our eldest was 2.5yo. The day she met her brother, she went from sleeping through the night to 6-7 overnight wake-ups each night. It was so unexpected! Luckily it lasted less than a week. But still....
If possible, I would divide nighttime duties so eg your partner is in charge of toddler wake-ups and you manage baby, even if you previously attended to toddler. Kids are adaptable. Try to keep the routine consistent but maybe look at increasing physical activities in late afternoon so toddler burns more energy, cap nap to 1hr, experiment to see what happens.
thank you. I was chatting with a friend and said she knows lots of children that end up needing to cut out their naps at that stage. Mine has been fighting naps and has been fine to go without a nap for the day and then going to bed at her usual time. A little protest but not like it was before.
However, I was in hospital for bub not having its usual pattern on Monday and my toddler refused to go to sleep that night. She just kept saying mummy hospital to my husband all the time. I have a feeling when I have my c section next week she will be a bit of a challenge for sleep regardless. I have organized that my husband do her night time routine and morning routine before daycare (the days I am expected to be in hospital she will be in daycare thank goodness). So that she has her normal routine with one parent and in that time my mother would be with me to hand my baby to me to feed etc while I’m at a stage of not being able to walk.
