Am I making a mistake?

I’d love to hear people’s thoughts or experiences…

My mother in law lost her husband in 2023, it was really unexpected and she decided to downsize to a flat as she said she felt quite lonely and overwhelmed by herself in her house. We’ve got two children in a two bed house, we’ve been saying for ages we’d like to move but selling and moving just costs too much with two littles to pay for as well! My MIL has suggested that she sells her flat and gifts us the money to buy a much bigger house with some sort of annexe or room to build a self contained living area for her. I think she’s lonely by herself as she’s never lived by herself before but I’m really nervous about saying yes as I’m so worried it’ll lead to problems further down the line. I have a good relationship with my MIL and she’s a lovely grandma but I’ve never spent more than a week with her in close quarters!

I wouldn't, personally. It'd get too complicated later on. Like, is there an expectation that you'd be her carers if she needed that? Would or could you give up work to do that if needed?

I think a better approach would be for you to save for your own place and encourage her to get out in the community more and make friends. My mum loves rock choir and v is thinking of volunteering in a charity shop as a way to meet people.

I also wouldn’t . I have lived in a 2 bed with two boys who are now adults and they shared right up until he left with no issues and actually they now miss each other.

my partner and I both agreed we’d care for our mums if the need ever arises as neither of us have dads or siblings that would help out.

We already own our home, just need to save a bit for something bigger once the kids get a bit older as I’m sure they will eventually moan about sharing 😆 I like the idea about trying to encourage her to get out a bit more, she would definitely benefit from the company. I

I wouldn’t necessarily have an issue with inviting my mum or MIL to live with us if they couldn’t be alone anymore. But I would have an issue with accepting the money because then it’s no longer your house it’s also partly hers. Then it becomes a bit of a weird vibe and she might expect more than you’re willing to give.

We almost ended up living with my MIL because she told us we could have her parents old house but then as soon as we moved out to renovate it she moved herself back in and it was clear she wouldn’t be leaving. It just never felt like my/our house so long as she was there, and since she’d given it to us I didn’t feel like I had a leg to stand on telling her she couldn’t be there. I know it isn’t quite the same but for starting a family it was so important to me the house be ours.

The theory and reality are often very different. I think everyone wants to care for their parents in theory but it can't always happen.

For example Alzheimer's care really needs professionals. Without outside help full time homecare would mean one or both of you couldn't work. Are you prepared for that? Can you financially do that?

I think it'd be much simpler and better for her if she gets back on her feet socially and then if she needs proper carers later on she can sell her flat to pay for any care.

Sounds like a good deal to me! If she’s happy living in a guest house in the garden, just make it superrrr nice fancy and cozy. Make sure the interior design and kitchen etc is so lovely. She’ll naturally want to spend more time there and that leads to boundaries being respected.

If you buy a house that has two reception rooms, design one so that it feels like a shared space for her and the kids. Have a cinema projector! While other spaces should be designed to feel separate and more your own space. For example, an open space kitchen/ living room can be shared if she loves to cook for the family. And a separate reception room can be more closed off, minimalistic, with office desk to feel less welcoming.

Also, since you have a good relationship, just ask her if she has any concerns about living with you. It’s likely she feels the same way!

But never underestimate the power of interior design and architecture in creating boundaries and setting a family’s lifestyle :)

Is this normal?

Is it just my husband that does this? He is able to work from home via his computer and in the mornings and evenings he is on there doing his job. When he is done for the day he tends to stay in the room and either play video games or watch something. He will occasionally come out and play with the girls for a few minutes and that’s it but when I really need him he says he is busy. My daughters are both 1 year old now and I am just wondering how much involvement should he have with them now?
Idk if this is the norm or not…..

5 month old activities

Hey everyone my baby is 5 months old and I want to reduce/cut screen time as I have read up on how bad it is what activities did people do to keep their baby entertained. Thank you in advance.

Tablet for kids

Alright don’t need any negative Nancy’s telling me not to get my 2yo a tablet so if that’s what your gunna do please don’t participate in my poll.

We’re about to move cross country 3+ day trip and my 2yo and 9m hate the car I’m talking scream their heads off till they are out of their seats. We’ve already changed car seats and it didn’t help so I’d like to at least have one entertained and sit next to baby and try and distract her or put her to sleep. Our new car has tvs but since they are rear faced my 2yo can’t see it.

Debating getting her a tablet or dvd player right now on long car rides I end up giving her my phone because I get so overwhelmed sitting in between both of them screaming and crying.

And yes I do bring different toys I bring snacks I play songs try to distract her other ways but for the sake of not losing my mind on this move I think this is best.

-A very overwhelmed and anxious to move mama 😓

My friend is over from another country but I don't feel like leaving the house

One of my old friend's is visiting where I currently live and we agreed to meet up today but I feel so tired and exhausted from everything that's been going on with me. I feel if I meet her I'm going to end up having another breakdown from the exhaustion which I have been having often. I'm just thinking about how I need to rest to be able to deal with my toddler and go back to work on Monday without feeling like I need another weekend. I'm torn on what to do so I need you guys to help me decide
