My 18mo is obsessed with his dummy and I'm trying to find the best way to try and wean him off it, even if it's just during the day, so that it doesn't affect his speech. He's not yet saying words and I'm worried Incase it's because he's having his dummy too much.
He can be quite whingey so it's almost become habit to give him his dummy when he's unsettled as I know it comforts him.
I know he's going to hate me taking it away as he always looks or cries for it when I try and hide it during playtime. But what's the best way to get him off the dummy long term? Do I just go cold turkey, leave it in his cot when he gets up and just let him have it at bedtime?
I do put one in his nursery bag for his nap time but I just don't know how often he is having it outside of his naps times as obviously I'm not there.

My 18month old loves his dummy too. I just started taking it off him when he was playing in the morning, I call it dummy tax now if he wants to get down off the sofa and play he has to pay his dummy tax 😂
He cried at first but as soon as he was distracted by toys he forgets about it. He has it back at nap time and bedtime.
Good luck 🤞

My 18 month old is the same, he won’t sleep without it and if he is without in the day he’s quite aggy until he gets it back usually although sometimes he can be distracted and go without at times. Beginning to feel like he will be with his dummy forever 😩😂

We're in the middle of this at the moment. I try and take it and hide away in the morning while he eats or plays so he's distracted, sometimes he gets very upset. We tell him at bedtime yes you can have your dummy because it's bedtime and really reiterating that the dummy was for sleep time. If he sees it he wants it though! We definitely had some aggy days but I think(hope!) he's starting to get it now. have to be consistent which is hard when they're crying! Also nursery should follow your lead if you ask them to limit it

We are the same. She actually can’t sleep unless she has a dummy in her mouth and one in each hand and I don’t know how we are ever going to get away from it 😂. However, we have now mastered (mostly) no dummy in the day. So we have been doing it for a while where when she gets up she puts all three dummies in her cot and we say ‘night night’ to them and she knows they stay there until she’s sleeping. We are going to try and wean her one dummy at a time 😂
that's funny. My boy likes one in his mouth and to hold one or two more. I'm gonna try the trick of leaving them in the cot though. Although im afraid he will cry so much that il end up getting them back out the cot part way through the day to settle him 😂
