Block feeding

Has anyone tried block feeding?

My 8 week old’s poop has been green for the last two weeks. GP and HV say it’s not a concern but on googling it suggests that she might not be getting enough of the fattier hindmilk (and too much fore milk). It suggests block feeding as a solution to this but I’ve also read this is something you should do if you have an oversupply. Which I might have but it’s not really a problem as baby is gaining weight well. Maybe it’s something I don’t need to fix, but if it is an imbalance of milk, I’m considering block feeding as I want her to have the good stuff!

Any advice?

Hi! So I had a massive let down and oversupply it’s only really just evened out now my baby is 13 weeks!

So I didn’t do the full block but I would feed from the same boob twice. So for example if she fed and then less than two hours later she wanted more I would feed from the same boob again.

But with block feeding I’m sure it’s supposed to be longer than that but I was worried about dropping supply!

I also expressed the fast bit off first sometimes or pulled her off and caught it and just let it flow without squeezing.

And then after she had a couple feeds on the same boob I moved to the other boob x

Typically, we all have an oversupply until approx 3 months.
Yes, I block fed baby. My midwife said to do 4 hours on each side, or you can express some of the foremilk first, then offer boob to baby.

thank you so much! Really helpful! The four hour block seems a bit much, especially at night when the timings can mean I’m not feeding from one breast for 6-8 hours! I was thinking of doing shorter blocks, as you’ve also suggested! Seems much more manageable and, like you, I don’t want it to affect my supply!

Did you have any issues with green poop? My baby was having the usual yellow poop but then it changed and I can’t work out why!

did the midwife suggest this because you had an oversupply or because baby’s poop was green?

Avatar

No but we have had some green poop since finding out she has CMPA!

oh no! Does that mean you’ll have to give up dairy if you choose to continue to breastfeed?

I have no choice but to continue because she now refuses a bottle! 😂 so yeah I have gone dairy free!

You will have a little bit of an oversupply at first but it’s not that common to have a foremilk imbalance. Make sure you’re eating enough fats to help hindmilk but as long as baby is gaining weight properly she’s fine. If she was getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk she would be dropping off of her growth curve (coming from someone who went through it.) you can always hand express before feeding but block feeding can mess with your milk supply since your breasts will start thinking baby doesn’t need as much as they’re making if they stay full. I would say just do one breast per feed and track diaper output & weight gain.

I'd speak to an IBCLC. I block fed for a bit following bad advice, and it not only didn't help the problem but my supply tanked and I had to work really hard to get it back up. Block feeding should only be done under very close supervision. If you Google IBCLCs you should be able to find one nearby who can help 😊

I've block fed since the start, she feeds until full on one side then falls asleep for 2 to 3 hours. When she cluster feeds she alternates between sides but I like her to fully empty at each feed. But my supply is pretty good so I don't worry about it dipping by only offering one. Mine had had an imbalance and greeny poos only when I offered both!

Thank you! All these comments are so helpful- really appreciate it! I’ve tried a version of block feeding (started at 4hrs, then 3, then 2 and now just switching breast each feed (only offering one). And we have yellow poops again! Weight gain is still good so I’ll keep an eye on how things go. Maybe we just do one breast per feed until she shows she wants more. Thanks again!

When did you circumcise your baby?
If you DID NOT or DO NOT have a circumcised son DO NOT comment this post is not for you!

Did you wait a certain amount of time or have it done immediately?
Again respectfully, this is only for the parents who choose to do so.
opinions about how not necessary it is will not be appropriate for this post. Thank you in advance. 🩵

My boyfriend booked a trip for us to go to mexico for a week as my push present. I have severe anxiety leaving my 7 month old with my mom. I know she will be in good hands but she’s exclusively breast fed for the most part but accepts bottles just fine. i have all my pumping parts packed and will pump when baby normally eats but i don’t want baby to forget me or have latch issues when i return!! any mommas ever experience this?

Vanilla extract

Has anyone used alcohol free vanilla in their babies formal to help them drink?
I’m 100% sure my baby refuses her bottles as she doesn’t like the taste of it!

Just anxious to try it, don’t want her to get used to it and then refuse bottles again after two weeks of using (correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read you use it for 2 weeks max)

TIA 🙂

Sex post C section

Hi ladies I’m 4 weeks 5 days postpartum and I had a C section. I’m not bleeding properly anymore just some brownish discharge stuff that starts on and off. I’d like to do the deed with my partner; is it okay to do so or shall I wait the full 6 weeks. I feel up for it but also worried because the advice is 6-8 weeks.

Postpartum

I’m only 3 days postpartum (FTM) and already have extremely bad anxiety. I’m crying every night, as I think of another night of no sleep. My baby will not settle in his cot, he cries every moment we put him down unless in his chair rocker. So me and my partner are having to alternate after 3/4 hours of being awake with him downstairs. I’m trying everything to get him to settle. It’s a load of overwhelming stress. I’m 23, I was desperate for a baby and now I have one and feel completely useless. I miss it just being me and my partner.

I feel like just a milk cow

Hi I have a 16 day old via c section, I'm a FTM never having been around babies before as I am the youngest of my household and from a small family. My husband is fantastic with our little one. But ever since I've had the baby I just feel like the only thing I'm good for is producing milk. I feel disconnected from my husband like the only reason he's around is because am producing milk. We were having some issues before the baby and we're struggling it took a while to feel like he was onboard even though he said he was from the moment we found out. I dunno if I'm feeling like a spear part because I'm lacking confidence with baby or because I feel like he wouldn't mind being a single dad. Is this postpartum hormones or something else?
