Do schools still use textbooks?

I saw someone say they dont have textbooks at their school. Everything is on laptops now? These kids will never know the fun of putting cover protectors on their books

That’s terrifying to hear. We need physical copies to exist accessibly for everyone. Making everything digital is such a slippery slope I fucking hate it

I teach HS AP US Government & Politics, we use a textbook and they have the option to have a physical copy or use a digital one. Some do much better on one or the other. It cuts down on the “I left my text at my dad’s house so my notes are late.” Girl bye, open that tablet and do your work anywhere you are. On the bus, on a trip, in the car, at the bowling alley do your work and don’t make excuses.
When they go to college it saves hundreds if not thousands of dollars to borrow digital copies instead of getting a physical copy.

Our public schools do not. My college kids do.

Oh wow I am curious to ask my friends with school age kids near me now.

I immediately thought obviously but all my friends teach first grade and I honestly don’t think they have any 😳

Avatar

Okay. This explains things. When they get to college, they’ve never had a textbook and never had to read a book (a novel) to completion. Their reading comprehension level... leaves something to be desired. When I demonstrate close reading and analysis in the class, they act like it’s mind reading.

UK secondary maths teacher here - for the younger years I use them in the classroom but they don’t take them home with them, for GCSE they get a physical textbook and they use it both in school and home, for A Level or IB they get a physical textbook and an electronic version and they get to choose which version would work best for them.

Very interesting! I checked my district its all on laptops now. 😬 not sure how i feel about it

I teach in the UK also - secondary level (ages 11-18). We definitely use textbooks throughout the age groups and in almost all subjects.

I have kids in all grades. In middle school they have laptops but received math workbooks, in high school all classes use laptops except AP classes. My kids actually have a harder time with computers than worksheets and books. As expensive as our internet is, it still goes out regularly. In elementary they have a lot worksheets still and reading workbooks but they also have laptops as early as kindergarten, maybe 4k too but my 4k is going to a private school so it's not the same as public.

Eta, I was also in college recently. Some classes had the option of physical or digital books, most were fully online.

My 16 year old has everything on an iPad for school. He’s never had to bring home a text book. Which is sad to me. I love physical books.

Avatar

My schools do up until 6th grade. 6th grade and up are given Chromebooks with textbooks digitally on there. But kids younger than 6th grade are still using hardback or softback text books

Avatar

When subbing for public schools last year I never saw a text book just online stuff. Every student gets a laptop starting in like 6th grade. In the Catholic private school I did my student teaching at last year they used text books in all grades

My SILs kindergartener was issued a tablet for all in school and homework…. I’m not looking forward to sending my daughter to look at screens all day because she really doesn’t handle them well.

I just graduated 😭 we literally did everything on the laptops

Are we teaching our daughters to hover in a public restroom?

I never sit on a public seat, I’ve always been taught to hover & if I accidentally splash on the seat, wipe up afterwards. I will be instilling this into my daughter but my stepdaughter who’s almost 10 always sits on a public seat and it gives me the ICK. When I ask if her mom never taught her she’s like no, which is not surprising as she never taught her how to properly wash up, shower & clean her hair. It’s so irritating.

Do you ever think some of your mom friends are ungrateful

I have a friend who has both sets of grandparents nearby and they watch their kids full-time for free while she and her husband works. Since her kids were born. One set of grandparents said they need a break and want to go on a month long cruise and they’re actually mad at the grandparents for “leaving them hanging”. Like excuse me? You have had kids for 4 years you need a back up plan and show gratitude for 4 years of free babysitting.
Some of us out her with zero help and they have the audacity.

Do you feel like your husband/ partner puts the same level of care into parenting, cooking, cleaning etc when it’s his “turn” in comparison to you?

I’m having such a hard time lately because it’s become so embarrassingly obvious that my husband just doesn’t care as much as I do. I feel like he compares himself to his own dad or other men in his life who walked out or do the absolute bare minimum so in his mind he’s excelling, and that watching his mom struggle as a single mom doing everything growing up has conditioned him to be almost blind to the labor of women like it’s just expected. I’ve talked to him about this multiple times and it will get better temporarily sometimes but not long at all

How do people clean with kids??

My son is 13 months old and I just cannot find the time to clean. I thought today what am I so scared of? Striped my sofa to hoover it and it was bad but my son was trying to eat things stand on there if move him tell him no I even put a film on for him and it did not end so I went and made him a cheese sandwich he didn’t eat it he just went back. I’m at a loss bc the mess is getting worse and overwhelming and by the time he’s in bed I’m exhausted he just never stops

Visitors

How is everyone navigating visitors once baby has arrived? I’m due to be having a c-section so I really want a quiet recovery at home. I’ve had major abdominal surgery before, and the last thing I wanted were visitors! I’d like to say no visitors for at least a week (2 would be nice), but equally I don’t want to upset anyone. I know my family will understand, it’s my partners I’m more concerned about.

My in-laws live an hour away, so I can’t imagine they’ll be happy to pop in for a quick visit, and both my partners sisters are 3 hours away, so I’m sure they won’t want to drive all that way just to visit for an hour max. I also don’t want to be bombarded by guests all at once, but how can we prioritise one sister over another. They both have multiple kids, so it’ll be a lot all in one go!

I get very anxious and overwhelmed by social situations, and I imagine I’ll find it difficult with the hormone shifts after birth.

Is my child delayed ?

Recently had parent evening for my child (4 in June) and the teacher said she is not where she should be she does not know her shapes, letters or numbers.

My child is able to show me where shapes are on a poster for example if I said find the rhombus she would find it however if I i said name it she couldn’t,

On a number line if I said “find number 4 she would find it” but she is not able to count to 4 correctly but she could show on her hands 80% of the time.

She can recognise letters around 15 correctly but will not say the alphabet.

The teacher also mentioned she doesn’t hold a pen correctly but I have seen her hold a pen with pincer grip and use them in both hands correctly.

I’ll post an image of what educational based supplies we have in the Comments please tell me if we can add anything 🙂
