My newborn is 6 days old, he is a massive breast fed cluster feeder so his feeding times are very unregulated.
He eats well and sleeps as much as newborns do however today he took an 8 hour nap. I know they should be woken every 3 hours for feeding however as he cluster feeds and have been told by the doctors today that he only lost 4% of his birth weight he is on the right track size wise. I started to get concerned with his nap length as usually he will have 1 big 5 hour nap on the day every day however I woke him up and needed him to feed. Once I woke him up (although he did feed) he just didn’t seem that interested.
Should I be concerned. I know nhs has rules on when babys should feed, how much and how often but has any other parents let there newborn sleep until wanting to be fed and is it concerning he didn’t seem starving once he had woken up?

I have 3 children and I have NEVER woken any of them to feed them..I keep seeing comments on here about waking them every 3 hours and setting alarms and I find it so bizarre..if its a one off I wouldn't be concerned babys are strange unpredictable little things x

Think of it as guidelines not rules. Baby lead is best. They also say if baby is correct weight and not losing rapidly they can sleep longer naps. And with growth spurts they might have a day where they are super hungry and then a day where they are more tired and recovering or getting ready for another spurt and will rest longer.
If a baby is hungry they'll eat and you'll know about it. As long as not off food for an extended period of time and weight remains try just follow cues and baby lead is bed. Get some rest yourself x

Every baby is different and THEY don't know the rules, they've not read them ☺️

The early days I use to wake her up and do the every 3hours then she sort of got in a routine. I found it a lot of easier to manage and used the huckleberry app to put in the times she ate. But I know every baby is different and a lot of midwife’s have different opinions on this. Some babies love to cluster feed so just go with what your baby prefers.

A hungry baby will wake you up screaming. Don't worry about that 🤣

My baby is 5 days old. I was told to not let them go longer than 4 hours at this age, just to keep weight and supply up x

At 6 days old I personally wouldn’t have gone longer than 4 hours. I also probably wouldn’t have let them sleep for 8 hours in the daytime as that will mean they’ll likely be awake all night.
I used to wake to feed every 3 hours or so in the daytime and then once they’d reached their birth weight I’d let them go longer stretches at night to get their body clock used to night and day.

At the beginning I thought that if he was hungry, he would wake up — but no. My newborn was very sleepy, and we got to a really difficult point where it was hard for him to feed. I would advise feeding him, especially if you had a C-section and are taking painkillers. Those were passing into my baby and making him extra sleepy, which is why he wasn’t waking up for his feeds.

At 6 days old, an 8 hour nap is very long and could lead to decreased blood sugar levels. Is your baby jaundiced at all?
I never followed the wake every 3 hours rule. But I wouldn't let them sleep that long, basically is a downward spiral, if they're sleepy they won't feed so their blood sugar drops which makes them more sleepy and then they can't feed etc.

First, it’s normal for babies to lose weight the first week, the meconium (black poop) it weighs more than normal poop.
They should start gaining weight again after that.
My LO sleepy through the night her first week, basically 8 hours from when we went to bed.
I was told this wasn’t normal and I set an alarm every 4 hours. I had to take her out and change her diaper in a well lit area just so she would wake up enough to feed.
I did this for maybe 4 weeks and the said sc*w it!
My LO is 9 months and born 98% and is now on 95% so perfectly healthy.
People like to freak you out, just stay vigilant and wait for the checkups.

Your baby needs to be woke up every 3-4 hours until they have reached their birth weight and then you can let them sleep without having to wake them up. 8 hours is very long for a 6 day old baby x
